rjrTne Butte Democrat in speaking of the recent election in this State, observes: It will show, moreover, that quite a large majority of the Democracy of this State,' entertain somewhat peculiar views with re-i gard to what are called " regular nominations " —that principle should be made tub-j servient to party usage. We say this, he-J cause we shall not consider the past election,J if it has resulted in favor of Mr. Douglas, - as by any means an endorsement of his principles; but merely as the effect of a blind devotion to party usage. undoubtedly believed that he was "regularly nominated" at Haltimore, and consequent-; ly voted for him, while at the same time they , repudiated his doctrines. | AOBICULTtrRK.—L N. Lincoln, of Wil--I!urn's college, delivered the agricultural address at the recent fair al North Adams.— [We make the following extract from this able production : Our farmers cultivate too much land—or "skin" too much, they really cultivate too little. In Rome the largest farms were only allowed to contain seven* acres, in Judea, under Moses' law, only sixteen to twenty acres. It is a miserable farmer who requires two hundred or three hundred acres of land to get a living on.— J Farmers should sow less and plow more, \ strip to their work and not grumble about the weather, the crops and their toilsome lives; they should use rtieir brains more and their muscles less. They should make theif ' home pleasant, their kitchens convenient, and so train and inspire their sons with rural I taste that the western fever will not carry ." them off: and make good, scientific wives , and housewives of their daughters. Do not'! 1 t the children get a notion that agriculture I ...

DAYS OF OLD. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 17 November 1860

DAYS OF OLD. Give me back the days of old — The days of honest labor; When man to man was frank and free, And would not wrong his neighbor. When men were not ashamed to work And cultivate the soil, Seeking no other boon than that Which follows earnest toil. When truth and right and honest zeal Gave all their proper station; And justice weighed in truthful scales, And wisdom ruled the nation. Our soldiers they were brave and true, And neither crest nor shield Was needed then, to make them men, In bivouac or in field. But let us not foVget to pay The tribute due to others; And while we sing of men of old, God bless our ancient mothers. And let us pray that come what may, The charming days of old, When right was might and honor blight Was valued more than gold. The Ballot Box. The ballot box—it falls as still As snow-flakes fall upon the sod, But executes a freeman's will "As lightning docs the w ill of God." SEASONABLE QvEiißH'.s. —The self-exam-ining society has proposed the followin...

The Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 November 1860

The Editor. The following graphic description of the turmoils and trials of an editor's life, we found upon the editorial table of John Shannon, the day after his death. It was by him taken from an exchange paper that day, as the date upon the other side of the copy shows. We presume that it was such a vivid description of his own experience, to a great extent, that it was his design to publish it, if life had been spared him. It portrays many of the painful realities of human life ; and must have impressed the mind of the departed editor, with a monition of his own untimely fate: It would require a master hand to sketch, with fidelity, that poor, abused class, known as editors. As a cotemporary truly remarks, he may be the " responsible," the "foreign," the "literary," the "local," the "commercial" in either department he is the subject of laudation, abuse, trials and triumphs. He must have a ready pen, remarkable versatility of knowledge, a correct judgment, and considerable nerve...

The Old Fashioned Mother. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 November 1860

The Old Fashioned Mother. "Old-fashioned mothers" have nearly all passed away, with the blue check and homespun woolen of a simpler but purer time.— Here and there one remains, truly accomplished in heart and life, for the sphere of dome. Old-fashioned mothers—God bless them! who followed us with heart and prayer all over the world; lived in our lives and sorrowed in our griefs; who knew more about patching than poetry; spoke no dialect but that of love; never preached nor wandered; "made melody with their hearts;" and sent forth no books but living volumes that honored their authors and blessed the world. If woman have a broader mission now, in Heaven's name let her fullfill it! If she have aught to sing, like the daughters of Judah, let her sit down by the waters of Babel, and the world shall weep; like Miriam, let her trumpet strain float gloriously over crushed but giant wrong, and the world shall hear, but let the trumpet and lament issue, as did the oracles of old, from behind...
