P«g« • 8ACH8E SENTINEL SEPTEMBER 1986 P spotlight on health HOSPITAL PATIENTS AND VISITORS CAN HELP PREVENT SOME INFECTIONS Bringing fruit to someone in the hospital may be thoughtful, but for some it can be deadly. Patients, literally, might be killed with kindness if they are infected with certain bac- teria brought in by visitors, says Dr. Harold C. Neu, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Columbia Univer- sity's College of Physicians and Surgeons. Fruits, leafy vegetables, and other foods have bacteria on them that healthy people tolerate well, but that can endanger some patients. Seriously ill patients with suppressed immune systems should not be given flowers because the water in which flowers arrive may be con- taminated with bacteria. Beware of Kissing "Kissing and hugging the patient may be dangerous be- cause bacteria can be trans- ferred that way, too," says Or Neu. "It is especially danger- ous if the visitor has a cold or other mild illness." "The importance...

SEPTEMBER 1905 SACHSE SENTINEL P«9« MY 1932 BUICK CONVERTIBLE BECAME A STAR! In April I met with Michael Saari, Vice President of Raintree Productions, out of Los Angeles, Calif. We met on a parking lot behind North Park Shopping Center with Coach Tom Landry, where the picture was taken. The ad will be in magazines such as Time, Newsweek, and others, for General Motors MCI (insurance). Michael Saari was impressed with the ad and they called me three weeks later; wanted to use the Buick again with Coach Landry for a T.V. commercial. I met them at 5:30 a.m. in the country near Parker. I was a double for Tom until he arriv- ed about 6:30 a.m. They asked if I minded Tom driving the Buick. I said "Okay, if he can drive it." He got in the car with me and drove as if he had driven it every day. The rest of the commercial was taken at Roger Meir Cadillac on L.B.J. The idea was that he was rear ended in Parker and took the Buick to Roger Meir for repair. Tom told me he learned to drive in a ...

SEPTEMBER 1985 SACHSE SENTINEL P«9* 11 Veterans Administration - A Robust 55 The U.S. Veterans Administration turned 55 on July 21, and in the words of current Administrator Harry N. Walters, "is more than ever dedicated to serving America's finest." The VA was created in 1930 to cen- tralize the federal government's respon- sibility for providing benefits to vete- rans and their dependents. Paralleling the vast increase in the number of vete- rans over the last 55 years, the VA has grown dramatically and is now the na- tion's largest independent federal agen- cy. The present veteran population of 28 million is almost six times the 4.7 million veterans living in America in the VA's founding year. Eighty-one of every 100 living veterans served during defined periods of armed hostilities and account for 59 percent of all Americans who ever served in war in over two cen- turies. Altogether, 81.5 million persons - veterans, dependents and survivors of deceased veterans - are potentially...

Pag* 14 SACHSE SENTINEL SEPTEMBER 1986 SURVEY RESULTS Final results of the Citizens Survey, organized and conducted by the Citizens for a Progressive Sachse, were tabulated at the group's August meeting. "We would ha\e liked to have had forms returned by everyone who received one, but the percentage of response we got was better than many surveys. Since the returned forms represent such a wide spectrum of citizens, the results seem to accurately reflect the feelings and goals of Sachse's residents," noted Larry Hokten. spokesman for the civic group. "It is the genuine hope of the Citizens for a Progressive Sachse that the survey information will guide the city's governmental and civic groups in mak- ing decisions that truly mirror the wishes of the residents," he added.
