Stfe® ft® Singapore also outlaws homosexuality, saying it violates conservative Asian norms, but prosecu- tions are rare in the city-state and Malaysia. Goss said Bangkok-based Utopia was careful to market its $28 guide as "a travel book," rather than a gay guide. It was already profitable at launch, Goss said, as it had sold advertising space to gay business- es seeking to promote themselves in the guide. "As the cover only has gentle references to the subject matter, it should be able to be sold without fanfare in even very uptight places," he said. He did not directly respond to a query on whether the book will be sold in the three nations featured. Despite Malaysia's conservative stance on homosexuality, Utopia says it has the "hottest gay scene going," based on surveys conducted from Singapore. There are also hints on where to "cruise" and it lists enterprises owned by gays and lesbians. Massage and travel services are also highlighted, but venues fronting for prostitutes are n...

letters Harrity supports new businesses Editor's note: A.J. Mistretta is a freelance writer who contributed a recent article on Oak Cliff's Bishop Arts District to Dallas Voice. He has acknowledged that he may have inadvertently combined statements by Michael Hamty into a single quote in a manner that could be construed to imply Harrity opposes allowing certain new businesses to move into the Bishop Arts District. Mistretta said thai Hamty, instead, said that certain types of businesses, particularly those catering to a late-night club scene crowd, would pmbably not do well due to several factors, including a lack of park- ing, the fact that the area is a "diy" neighborhood in terms of alcohol sales and the fact that many area res(- idents are more settled and not as likely to take part in late-night club activities. An article by A .J.Mistretta regarding the question of whether the Bishop Arts District was becoming Dallas' big gay scene was published on the front page of the April ...

I ife+sty lefeature Clear ciS ct Quintessential synth duo Erasure ditches the electronics. this unplugged experiment earn Andy Bell and Vince Clarke the respect they rightfully deserve? By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor o n tour, Andy Bell has schlepped through Dallas countless times over the last 20 years. "Actually, 21 years," Bell says from his hotel room in New York. But one memory about Big D stands out. "I met a lovely guy, who used to be a Dallas cop: His name is Randy, and his twin brother, who is straight, was called Andy," Bell remembers. "We had a little party after one of the clubs closed. I was sitting on the sofa, and I remember looking deep into his eyes and saying to him, 'God you're so good looking' — not realizing I was complimenting the straight one." So did Bell score the ultimate double- pleasure? "Oh, no. I ended up with Randy, the prop- er one," he says. The last time Erasure performed in Dallas was at the Lakewood Theater in May 2005, during the "Nightbir...

Everything: impossible Adrenaline-purriped Cruise blockbuster is ridiculous and irresistible By Steve Warren Contributing Film Critic After a year of trying to prove he's a person, however freaky, Tom Cruise is back to being a product, well packaged and marketed. After co-creating "Felicity," 'Alias" and "Lost," director J.J. Abrams could write his own ticket. He's written an E-ticket adventure tailor- made for adrenaline junkies. There's a tense confrontation between Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) before the story unfolds from the beginning. Ethan's quit fteldwork to train operatives and marry Julia (Michelle Monaghan). But he returns to duty on a mission that takes him to Berlin, the Vatican and Shanghai in pursuit of Davian and a doomsday device. Abrams frequently doubles the excitement by having two things going on at once, like a heli- copter dogfight and an explosive device implant- ed in someone's head. There's also an underlying problem of a mol...

ALL THE QUEEN'S MEN When it came to braiding blistering rock, flam- boyant theatrics and a twisted good time, no band did it better than Queen. And when it comes to recapturing the magic of Queen's live shows, Dallas has no better friend than local tribute band Queen For a Day. Formed by bandleaders Brian Harris and Gregory Finsley, pictured, who play the parts of Brian May and Freddy Mercury respectively, QFAD was born of a longtime admiration of the group's unparalleled catalog. Onstage, band members model themselves after their respective player, which in the case of Finsley means adopting Mercury's trademark leotards and muscle shirts. Last year, Hurricane Katrina chased New Orleans-based Finsley back to his native Dallas, making the logistics of booking shows less tricky. Don't miss your chance to see this impressive foursome's note-perfect versions of some of the baddest queer rock the world has ever seen. — Gilbert Garcia Firewater, 10261 Technology Blvd. May 5 at 10 p.m. $5....

cussing most of his books — aside from telling us which characters were based on specific friends of his, and what they thought about this. Only "Caracole" gets much mention, and that's mainly in the context of how his unflattering por- traits of the New York literati cost him many friendships (including that of Susan Sontag). Indeed, this oversight, as well as his relative lack of comment about living with HIV for over 20 years, are two of this book's chief disappoint- ments. People familiar with White's writing style will enjoy his layered, mannered prose style and frequent attempts to ingratiate himself with the reader: such as "I came to despite nonessential verbal ornaments, though the reader may decide I'm still guilty of inconsequence." "My Lives" unobtrusively demands that one take one's time reading it, savoring the text like a fine wine. His accounts of historical details are striking. His chapter on "My Blondes" is rivet- ing. And his unsparing self-analysis is vicarious-...

But is the seminal play about modern gay life still relevant? By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer JOKING ALLOWED: While "Angels" deals frankly with the effects of AIDS, that is not all it is about, says Marianne Galloway. 1996? When it opened on Broadway in 1993, just before the turn of the centu- ry, there was buzz about End of Days, and "Angels" took on the mantle of prophesy — what the next 10 years might hold for gay culture and America in general. Now that the millennium no longer approaches, and the AIDS epidemic is no longer the hot-button issue it once was, has "Angels" lost its relevance? Not a chance, says this troupe. Scripts that deal with immediate political issues often become dated and irrelevant, but "Angels" is more than that, Galloway argues, and "the challenge with any script is to approach it with the bigger picture in mind. You have to ask yourself if this is genuinely a script about AIDS, and it's not. But what was so horri- fying about the AIDS crisis remains horrifying, and that is the broader, overarching theme of loss and change." So while being diagnosed HIV-positive is no longer a death sentence, having the disease remains a powerful social stigma, says Galloway. Thus in t...
