THE Western Champion AND PARKES AND FORBES REPRESENTATIVE. FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1898. Editorial Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 10 June 1898

THE PARKES AND FORBES REPRESENTATIVE. FBIDAY, JUNE 10, 1898. New South Wales has escaped a great danger, and for some time to come at any rate her citizens can breathe freely. Neither her indepen dence, her money, nor her rightful pre-eminence can be taken from her, and any further steps that may be taken must be with the full concur rence of her own people, after the matter has received much fuller examination and much more searc&ing criticism than has yet fallen t<3 it. The advocates ot the Bill, by their " ugly rush," nearly managed to carry the measure and thus commit the province to an irrevocable and moat humiliating and disadvantageous change of status before they had had time to understand what it was all about, That the colony should have been exposed to such a' danger is certainly a blot on the wisdom of her legislators. OH HR & How different the treatment ac corded to the smaller colonies by the Bill. If any measure passed by the Federal House o...

The Storyteller. The Gipsy's Daughter. CHAPTER XIII. "MILADI!" [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 10 June 1898

I CHAPTER XIII. " MILADI !" Sir Victor and the new Lady St. Maurice were in Paris, and appar ently, also, in raptures with each other. They were residing at a charm ing little hotel, where Rose was called miladi, and obsequious ser vants waited on her. She was a little gourmand, and delighted in all the elegant French dishes. . The glitter and rainbow splen dour of these waves of life that flowed by her and about her in this great city enchanted her. 1 Oh, Victor, are we to live here for a whole year ? How delicious !' she exclaimed . ' Lip here, my sweet! Indeed not. Wliv. Paris is full of English people. I should be. met and recognised at once I should be expected to live among the rest, visit and be visited, and then -— ' And then—are you ashamed of me ?' sighed Rose. ' Of course not. But you your self planned for a year of retire ment and privacy, when you could learn all those numerous little things, in word and manner, and style, that belong to the circle you must live in,' ' ...

CHAPTER XIV. BREAKERS AHEAD. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 10 June 1898

CHAPTER XIV. BREAKERS AHEAD. Even in these few days of rap ture since bis marriage, Sir Victor St. Maurice had been forced to realise that a year was all too short a time to propose in which to render his wife fit for a place in his own social circle. The most zealous labour could not in a year conquer all her glaring errors, aud make up for . her evident defi ciencies. And, unfortunately, he saw no token of zealous industry, little evidence of a desire to im prove. Zeal in self-indulgence, includ J iog indulgence iu indolence, was | all the zeal discernible in hisBose. But Sir Victor was iu earnest; j his self-justification before his mother aud friend was at stake ; and love of Hose and pride in himself enlisted him in making Boae's manners bear some ratio to her beauty. He could not, in her, hope for j the safety of silence—that by being dumb and looking transcen dency lovely, she could hide de fects . Hose was incurably loqua cious . | What a curse is this loquacity, when one ha...

The War. SICKNESS IN CUBA. AMERICA OAUTIOUS. HER FORCES PREPARED. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 10 June 1898

SICKNESS IN CUBA. AMERICA OA0TIOTJS. HER FORCES PREPARED. America has deemed it advisablej owing to the great mortality now prevailing, and the near approach of the unhealthy season in Cuba, to take precautionary measures for safeguard ing the health of her forces engaged there. As showing the imperativeness of this step, not only have her own forces been prepared, but arrange ments are being made to supply the insurgents with medical stores. Taking to account the serious recommendations of General Wyles, Col P. A. Hoffman, and other known military experts, it may safely be concluded that in the medicine chest room will have rest found for Dr, Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, which effected such a marvellous cure in the case of Mr. John Hinnigan, of 18 Bay-street West, Sydney. 'My illness,1 said Mr. Hinnigan to the reporter who called upon him, 1 started as a good many other illnesses do—just a cold, and at first I didn't take much notice of it, for I've often had colds before ...
