THE LATE HAMILTON HUME, THE EXPLORER. (Abridged from the Yass Courier, April 22.) Early on the morning of the 19 th instant, Hamilton Hume passed away to his rest. That his memory deserves to be had in grateful re membrance by his countrymen, the following brief memoir will, we think, fully prove ; for though the public actions of his life were few in number, yet they were of such a character as accurately to show nrliof moiinnv nf Ka rrrn o ? . muiiinui Vi rncui uy VV Cto y auu in the history of Australian explor ation, his name must always hold a prominent place— a place quite on a level with those of Stuart, Ken nedy, Mitchell, and M'Kinlay. Hamilton Hume, was born at Par ramatta, on the 18th June, 1797. He was the eldest of the four chil dren of Mr Commissary-General A. H. Hume, who, in 1797, had left England for Australia on board the frigate Guardian, commanded by Riou,, ' the gallant good Riou,'' of subsequent historic fame. Of these four children only one now survives — Mr F...

The fourth and last day of the Rand wick Autumn Meeting binder the auspices of the Australian Jockey Club was as unfavourable in regard to /weather as the previous days had been. Frequent showers fell fell during the morning, rendering; tlie ground extremely soft, and limiting tlie attendance on all parts of the course ; but the three mile race for the A.J.C. Plate was the cause of considerable attraction and much inteiest, and proved to be one of the best contested and most ex citing of the events of the meeting. A round half-dozen faced the starter in the Rous Handicap, and the winner was found in Mr Tait's Arrow, making his third victory during the present meeting. In the Randwick Handicap, Valentine scored his first win, after having made frequent efforts to get a front place, and on this occasion he had the honor of beating a good field, including Priam, M( Galium Mohr, Vixen, Patriarch, and Kingfisher. MELBOURNE. April 25. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 30 April 1873

MELBOURNE. (from our own correspondent.) April 2o. .ihe tjoider Lustoms liill has passed the Sydney Parliament, so we are informed by telegram. But unfortunately there does not seem much probability of this Government being able to accept the terms contained in Mr Parkes* measure ; so that, from what I can learn, there is not much chance of any settle ment being brought about for a considerable time yet. Public sympathy has been excited this week on behalf of some three hundred Communists, confined board of the French vessel, L Urne, which put in here on her way to New Caledonia, a miserable island, to which France is transporting all her political prisoners. The freedom of the British flag has protected one of the unfortunates, who managed to make his escape — which, after a swim of about an hour and a half, he effected. By the outgoing mail steamer, Sumatra, Mr F. A. G wynne departed for Suez, and W. Cricbton for Venice. Our Governor is really a most complacent man ; he is charmed...

Catastrophe at Smyrna. — A fear ful disaster has occurred in Smyrna. On Sunday night, the 9th February, at ten o'clock, the Cafe Kivoto, built upon piles, on the sea, broke down suddenly during aperformance given by a company of acrobats. The proprietor of the cafe says he only sold 108 tickets, but the people saved declare that there were 200 persons present. Most of them were of the poorer class, and there were not many Turks there, or young men of respectable families. At ten o'clock a loud cracking was heard, and within five minutes the entire cafe had disappeared under water. A few of the persons near the entrance contrived to cscape, and some persons saved themselves by jumping through the windows into the sea. The boatmen rowed up in numbers, but their efforts to save life were in vain. Sureya Pasha, tlie governor-general ; Ib rahim Agha, chief of police ; and Tahir Bey, commander of the gend . armerie, who were at once on the spot, exerted themselves strenuously, but fruitle...

RAILWAYS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 30 April 1873

RAILWAYS. The Sydney Morning Herald gives the following in a leader referring to the Railway Act Amend ment Bill:- --Jn railway construction it would be wiser to take America as our model in preference to England. The Americans have had to build railways for service, not for ornament or convenience of pas senger traffic. They have cut their coats according to their cloth. First of all a rough line has been made at a slight cost ; nnd then as profits were amassed, tbe.y were applied to the renewal of these lines with enduring materials. The stations were few and rough, atid the gates at crossings, together with fences enclosing the lines, were totally dispensed with, and the pace was slow. In corroboration of this statement we mi^ht quote from the writings of many recent travellers, but it will suffice if we refer our readers to a paragraph from one of the letters of the observant author of the 'Warfaring Notes' which appeared in the Herald on the 24th January, 1872. In describing th...
