ROUND THE DISTRICT. TATONG. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 1 December 1914

ROUND THE DISTRICT. TATONG. Harvesting operations are In full swing around, but the crops are very light. The beautiful showers of rain that fell during the last week, although very welcome, came too late to do the crops any good. At the same time the pota toes and other summer crops will be considerably benefited by the fall; also the grnss has responded rapidly. Paddocks which a few weeks ago would have burned are now showing green. The election, as far as Tatong was concerned, was very tame, as less than 20 per cent, only recorded their votes. This is not quite satisfactory. Is interest in the State elections dying ? It would appear so. Our electors want shaking up. It was mooted some time ago that the Benalla trades would take their picnic along the Tatong line somewhere this year. But they i took it to Beechvvorth instead. I think it is a pity they did not patro nise the Tatong line and thereby show their appreciation of the new connection, as well as assisting towards making t...

THE Benalla Independent. PUBLISHED ON TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS "Stands close to all But leans on none." FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1914. SHIRKING COUNCILLORS. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 4 December 1914

"I THE Beitalla litdtptitdtiti. Published on Tuesdays and Fridays "Stands close to all * But leans on none." FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1914. SHIRKING COUNCILLORS. The deputation on Monday, re presenting tbose ratepayers who signed a petition promising support to an electric lighting scheme, must have felt disappointment and disgust when they came to fully realise how hollow are the pretences of even shire councillors. At the previous meeting of the council the Central riding members were asked to go through all the electrical pabulum in the possession of the council, and submit a report at the following (last Monday) meeting. In the meantime the! deputationists, with their petition, desired to strengthen the hands of the Central riding members in par ticular and the shire in general ; but, as a leading member of the deputation informed us, they did not wish to have the question thrashed out at a public meeting owing to the variety of non-expert opinions, in addition lo which there was a p...

OBITUARY. MRS. BENJ. HALL. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 4 December 1914

OBITUARY. MRS. BENJ. HAI^L. In the course of our Shire Coun cil report ou Tuesday brief refer ence was made to the death of Mrs. Benj. Hall, wife of a well-known resident of Goorambat. Some time ago a cancer developed, and an operation was recommended by Dr. Barrington. Mrs. Hall went to Melbourne a fortnight ago and became an inmate of Dr. Moore's private hospital. Unfortunately the case had gone too far for human interference and Mrs. Hall gradu ally sank and died. Deceased was 54 years of age, and had lived most of her years at Goorambat. Every body had a good word for the generous-hearted, loving soul that sought to leave the world brighter and happier than she found it, and the deepest sympathy is extended towards the members of her family —two sons and three daughters (Mrs. Geo. Ledger and Misses Edith and A. Hall). The remains were brought from Melbourne and interred at Devenish on Tuesday. There was a very large attendance of sorrowing friends at the grave side. Rev. Mr. Bat...

The Non-Advertiser. [Newspaper Article] — The Independent — 4 December 1914

The Non-Advertiser. Breathes there a Man with soul so dead Who never to himself hath said: "My trade of late is getting bad, I'll try cnother two-inch ad." If such there be, go mark him well, For him no bank account shall swell, No angel watch the golden stair To welcome him a millionaire; ,The man who never asks for trade, By local lines or ad. displayed, Cares more for rest than worldly gain And patronage must give him pain. Tread lightly, riendB let no rude sound Disturb his solitude profound. Here let him live in calm repose, Unsought by men except he owes, And when hedies, go plant him deep, fhat naughtmay break his dreamless Sleep, Where no rude clamor may dispel The.quiet that he loved so well, And that the world may know its loss, Place on his grave a wi-eath of mote; And on a stone above, "Here lie* £ champ who wouldn't mdrartlM."

It was unanimously de cided to hold a dance shortly, which it is to be hoped will be well attended.
