ANOMALOUS SOCIAL STATE OF ENGLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 14 April 1852

ANOMALOUS SOCIAL STATE OF ENGLAND. ExGLxaD at this moment exhibits some singular social and economical anomalies, not inexplicable, but requiring explana tion. 3Manchester and the cotton dis tricts are in a state of great distress, notwithstanding free trade, the opera tion of which was to exalt cotton and ruin corn; and, notwithstanding foreign corn and low prices, the British farmer is not yet ruined. It is true, that the farmers are beginning to turn their at tention to something else than wheat and barley; but if the cultivation of flax, for instance, pays, and the price of bread is moderate, the farmer is not in jured, and the community is benefitted, We are told that agriculture wants a remunerating crop, labour wants abun dant domestic employment, the High lands want some production that will stand in the room of potatoes and kelp, manufactures want a rival to foreign cotton, and commerce wants an adjust ment of the exchanges based on a more equal balance of imports and expor...

WEEKLY COST OF THE TIMES NEWS PAPER. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 14 April 1852

WEEKLY COST OF TIE TIOES' NEWS PAPER.--In a recent work on the Eng lish newspaper press, written by Alex ander Thornton Hunt, the following is given as the weekly cost of the T nices: Editing, writing, and reporting a double daily paper during the session of Parliament .. 20 Foreign and local correspon dence ... 100 Printing, machining, publishing, and general expenses of double paper, with occasional second and third edition, and an evening edition three days a week ...200 Weekly total ... 520 The yearly charges of an established daily paper, cannot therefore be estimated at less than £25,000. The enormous cost of the paper and stamps have not been considered in this account, as it depends entirely on the number of copies printed. The overland mail is a costly impedi ment to a newspaper, unless it be allowed to share the expense with others. It amounts co about £4,000 a-year, that is £20 a-week cack, when divided between four papers. A C'reat expense is entailed by the transportati...
