NARRATIVE OF AN ESCAPE FROM DROWNING. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 21 July 1870

NARRATIVE OF AN ESCAPE FROM DROWNING. . ON the morning of the 16th of Novem . her, 1821, a boat's crew of six men left Deal Beach in a lugger on purpose to . look out for vessels coming up Chan . nel; the wind was fresh, west-by-south. ' Soon after getting afloat, they descried -a sail at the back of the Goodwin, to ? which they at once bent their course. ? On' rounding the South Sand Head a . very strong sea was running which nearly filled the boat. They succeed ed, however, in reaching the ship which was on shore, and left two of their men .on board, viz., William Dawes and Alexander Ollick. It was a Danish brig named " Hofneign," from Ham burgh bound to the West Indies, with a cargo chiefly of linen. The two boatmen, as is usual in such cases, sounded the pumps, and found two feet of water, which at oUce as sured them of the danger the shij) was in. They persuaded and entreated the .captain and crew, without loss of time, to leave the ship, but without avail. Their object was to ...
