The Passing Show. [Newspaper Article] — Moree Gwydir Examiner and General Advertiser — 21 January 1902

The Passing Show. The House of Representatives has been faicly busy during tlm past week, but with all, can scarcely be considered to have, thoroughly sottle.d down to business. There has already been a icgular flood of Tariff talk and ve.ry littlo actual work. Sir William Lyne. when applied to on the matter, said there had been too much extended talk, for the whole of the past week had practically been absorbed in dis cussing what in reality only amounted to three items. Th« few reductions which were made wero of course not s»rioU9, but still at tho same time the Governmaut would naturally have liked to have seen the items passed as they wero presented, This is pretty plain speaking There is no doubt that tho Govsmment wnuld have liked to have neon the Tariff passed as it was iutroduced, but such, as experience shows, would bo too much for any Government to expect. In addition to this latter fact there is also the. fact that there wero many object ionabln featureB about tlffi tarif...

The Barber's Pole. [Newspaper Article] — Moree Gwydir Examiner and General Advertiser — 21 January 1902

The Barber's Pole. The sign of the barber's pole is a mystery to most people, but it seems that in olden times (the ' Liverpool Post' says) the profession of a surgeon was practised in common with the art of ft barber, and the one who practised thus was designated a barber-surgeon. A company under this title was founded n- early as 1308, and the Lnndon company was incorporated in 1461, in the first year of Edward IV. The professional union was dissolved in the reign of Henry VIII., 1540, when it was declared that ' No person using any shaving or barbery in London Bhal! occupy any surgery, letting of blood, or other matter, except only drawing of teeth,' These barber Burgeons exhibited over their doer* a polo, which was variously coloured with running -bunds of red and white, or in some cases red, white, and blue. The red and white bands would, no doubt, represent the. white bandage stained with the blood of the patient, whilst it has been suggested that those bearing thno colors ind...

Who Owns Lindon? [Newspaper Article] — Moree Gwydir Examiner and General Advertiser — 21 January 1902

Who Owns London? Tho question is asked, and naturally anyone would say ' Why, the London ers, of course.' But London, or what is practically tho 'city,' belotigs to half a dnzi'U noblemen. Tbeto peers aro given in their order of imporlnncH us Viacount Portman, the Dukes of Wi'st minuter1 Portland, Bedford, nnd Grafton, and Lord Northampton. Th'- chief sinner is the first, Lord Port man', whoso wealth, socialism will be pleased to note, is such that he requires a fit nil' of secretaries to handle it. Not tbnt it makes him indillerent to tho value of each exira bawt.ee, as whe.n a street full of ninety-nine years leases fell in the other day lid multiplied the rents l-y six, nnd ihn tonxnls found it advi-i. able to pay them. ? This noble landlord owns no less than fifty distinct city blocks, and if he hnd to collect his rents himself, and did it every week, he would probably be. employed evety one of his walking hours knocking at -oors and filling his rent bag. T-vo thousand houses ar...

A COUNTRY PARTY. [Newspaper Article] — Moree Gwydir Examiner and General Advertiser — 21 January 1902

A COUNTRY PARTY. O.ncb more we are told that in con nection with the next session of tho StatnParliamontan aggressive Country Party is to be formed. But can we believe it in the teeth of similar mere assertions made in connection with previous parliaments 1 Over and over again has the importance of forming such a party been pointed out, but nothing whatever has been done in this diroction, Why the matter has been allowod to corno to the surface so often, and to invariably lapse with startling rapidity, it is vory difficult to tell. But nevertheless the fact re mninB, and this in view of the circum stance that tho country districts stand but h very poor show of getting their requirements attended to without such a party seems exceedingly strnngii. When wo come, to consider the whole of the oircumstuncps such apathy seems to to alarming Tho present ministry of course, calls itself a country govern ment, but although they may lmvn a kink that way they cannot in any«eneo I'H considered ...
