AUSTRALIA AND AMERICA. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 14 April 1888

AUSTRALIA AND. AMERICA. [WVi reprint the following extracts from a recent interesting communication of tlhe American correspondent of the EVENING NEWs. His complaint, however, that America is held in small account in Austra lia will appear to many to be singularly ill. founded]: To the Australian who visits America it must;, and does frequently, occur that his fellow-countrymen are wonderfully ignorant of this most advanced; and-well, to use a Yankeeism, " enlightened" nation. Indeed, the sense of this ignorance grows until it becomes fairly oppressive. Of course, there must be a reason for it, and it doubtless lies in the fact that most of the information of American affairs that finds its way to the southern hemisphere is filtered through the English press, and thus loses its native color ing. If the current English opinion of the United States be not unjust, it is at least very biassed, and one has only to converse with Britons who have spent some time heor to fully appreciate it...

The Weather, The weather, vwhich during thg past month has boon singlarly wvarm and dry for the season of th yearc, has grown, since Wedneaday last, sonsibly coolor and more pleasant. The night of Wednesday looked promising for rain, the sky being heavily overoast, but after consider* able eloectrical display, accompanied at intorvals by peals of distant thunder, prinoipally seaward, the morn broke fine and clear and tile day was "grald." Woe hlave boon iaforied that some rain fell, on tile afternoon of Wednesday, in the neighbourhood of Saddleback and at Dapteo, and places in the immediate vicinity; but, withl thle oexeoptlon of a little mist, which, by no stretch of the hiagination, could be con. strued into, rain, lno moistlure fell to gladdenll the hoeart of Ithe fuamer and the dairynman, both of whoms are groeatly in need of it.
