EUROPEAN AND GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 6 November 1896

EUROrEAN AND GENERAL ' NEWS. The Sultan of Turkey is alarmed at the proposal to hold a congress of re presentatives of the Great Powers to revise the Berliu Treaty. The drought in the North is causing great distress. Various measures for the relief of the farmers are being devised. The trial of the directors and auditors of the City of Melbourne Bank has resulted in their acquittal, the jury, after several hours' delibera tion, returning a verdict of not guilty. It is stated that t,he Sheik of Islam, though nominally a guest at the Yildiz Palace, is kept there as a pris nicr, as In; is said to favour the deposition of the Sultan. The Government has acquiesced in the recommendation of the Board of Management of the Adelaide Hospital fur the dismissal of Professor Watson from the position of honorary consult ing surgeon at that institution. SUMMER PRUNING FRUIT TREES. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 13 November 1896

SUMMER PRUNJNG FRUIT TKEE8. Summer pruning (writes Mr. J. T. Hague of Clare to the I hronicle) is one of-the most important, and ItafU practised operations in fruit culture. The advantages of summer pruning are ^uod niul rtgn.nr crops and the fruit is low down. »o that most of it can be gathered without the aid of steps. In other words, it means a bigger crop and less work iu harvesting it. Fruitgrowers will do well to try it. Youug as well as ola trees should be pru ned. if all the shoots that are not re quired to form the main branches of a j ouug tree are checked a lot of waste growth is saved and Lite energy of the tree is forced iuto fewer channels, 'lhe result is a sturdy tree, capable of bearing a heavier crop without breaking down sooner than if it hud not been pruned. 1 do not believe in topping young trees unless they are making very strong growth, and then ojiiy to pinch off the tops once or twice during the summer, i I' topped too much they get stuuted and come into bear...

FRIDAY, NOVEMJllill 13. 1896. IRRESPONSIBLE AGITATORS. J i) almost every community there art1 one or two per sons, who, having an extremely exaggerated idea of their own importance and abilities, having been unsuccecsful, probably, in an at tempt] to get a sent oil the local administrative body, whatever it may be, having in reality no influence whatever, yet flattering themselves in the belief that their views and opinions are the best,-—there are such persons in every place, and J.lfmmark is not without them.
