OUR WATER SUPPLY. PUMPING V. GRAVITATION. A VISIT TO NED'S GULLY. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Independent and Pastoral, Agricultural & Mining Advocate — 7 December 1898

OUR WATER SUPPLY. PUMPING V. GRAVITATION. A VISIT TO NED'S GULLY. Except at the himU of'the local fr. s.s icry little consideration. is being given ns to which scheme for supplying Gundaga-i with water shall bo adopted. The ratepayers are still apathetic, and ? anno of them ssem to think that they have fr'ghtened tiio ft!derm9ii into subjection, and that fcho matter has been knocked on the head. These people bavo their own private water eupply — in the shape of afaw tanks — and that being so they do not rare to bo saddled with extra cxponso for tha benefit of themselves individually and the wholo community colloctivnly — ' God for us all, and the do'il take the hindmost' is the motto they swear by. Thero ia not the slightest doubt thtre seems to be a predisposition on the pint of the poop's in favor of the pumping scheme ; they look upon the Murrumbidgeo as tho only means of providing them with a neverdimiu ishiug and good supply of water. In that respect wo ogree with, them somewha...

QUOTIDIAN QUACKERY. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Independent and Pastoral, Agricultural & Mining Advocate — 7 December 1898

QUOTIDIAN QUACK SET. If the census returns supplied 'a ready and reliable means of 'finding out the number of those ?who gain a livelihood by fool ing the credulous public they would prove inexhaustible mines of curious information. Especially ' would such statis tics be of service in -this colony, ?where, owing partly to the ]axity of the law against impu dent frauds and quackeries, and partly, we are afraid, to the amount of goose-b.ains con tained in human skulls, the confraternity of empirics, sooth- sayers and clairvoyants et hoc genus omne flourish and mul tiply exceedingly. Quite an appreciable proportion of the whole population must be en gnged in ' taking down ' the rest by ,dne sort of elaborate foolery or other. We do ? ,. not allude to those kinds of swindling which are taken cog - nizance of by the law, such as the confidence trick, that ? ? ' 'proves so effective on country folk, or any other dodge that is openly 'cronk,' but to those which would drag out a linger ing,...
