CORRESPONDENCE. BALDINA, November 24. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 28 November 1879

CORRESPONDENCE. (From our own Correspondents.) BALDINA, November 24.   Fire broke out in a grass paddock belonging     to John Turner of Baldina, on Monday last between four and five o'clock in the afternoon one hundred acres of wheat in the joining paddock from where the fire originated, it got into the wheat in several places but did not do much damage as the wheat was not ripe, one of the neighbours working in a paddock below saw the fire and hastened to the place and put it out, it seems rather strange that fire should take place on a day like Monday last with cold wind blowing all day.

Our Harvest Prospects. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 28 November 1879

We have had a succession of ^inferior fiai-vests, and the whole colony has greatly suffered, though the constant enlargement of agricultural settlement Luis been but little checked. This year largely as a result of our enlightened land policy, we have under wheat crop somewhat over l,4000;000 acres accord ing to the best authorities, and judging from -what we have seen and heard in this district, the average here, barring heavy storms, is likely. tQ be over 12 bushels; andinotiier places-from. the published reports itiwill not beOessbut rather more. The heavy rains of the past few weeks have done some injury t3 the hay crops but^very much -more good to the wheat, and as the rabbits have- been almost entirely extirpated so much earlier than was expected, there seems no drawback - to ' the general prosperity. In fact we are not at all sure bat that the feeding ...
