SPORTING. CRICKET. ALEXANDRA V. MANSFIELD. The annual district match between the above clubs took place at Mansfield on Satur day last. An early start was made by the local team, breakfast being piartaken of at Woodfield in the open, and highly relished. The weather was extremely cold and ehowery, the frequent gales of wind and rain nmking the game very unpleasant. It was decided to play 12 men a-side, and Cap tain Williams, having w'on the toss from Captain Whiting, elected to bat. lie and Comerford openedl thel Mansfield innings to the bowling of Leckie and Norbury. When the score stood at six G. Johnson missed Williams off the second ball of Norbury's first over. When the score reached 21 M'Pheo sent Williams back, andl after one more had been added Docking held one from Comerford, making two wickets for one run in M'Phee's first over, or 2 for 22. Dr. Robertson and G. Forbes kept things going merrily for some time, owilng to a series of bungling on the part of the Alexandra fiel...

Nichols,. shire president, presided, and .sr large number of items were given by the chil dren in a really creditabme manner. Praise is dim to Miss Stotters, the head teacher, for the performance of her pupils in their various items, which included tpianof.rte solos and duets, physical drill, songs, recitations and part songs by the whole school, including character songs. "The. i Fisher Girls," iy the scholars, was very prettily executed. " The Boot Black " song, by the boys, was humorously rUn dored, with plenty of vigof and go, and the ".John Brown '. school song, by the whole school, made the audience exceed ingly hilarious, as the nodding of somne of the mites was exceeoringly comical. Miss M'Intyre, a visitor from Kalgoorlie, West Australia, ably presided at the piano. After the concert the chairman Ipresented. a prize to ev...

Forward Alexandra. A few weeks ago Mr. T. A. Fox inter viewed the leading business peoi,le of the town and discussed the necessity of a Progreses Association for Alexandra. It was not surprising to find that out of fully, 50) persons spotken to onedisýcntient soiee was raised. This was, irndeed, antisfac tory. The next move of this gentleman was to call .t meeting of busintes people only, not for the purpose, as somel pessi mists will have, of forming an association. but simply to discuss the advisability of proceeding in the direction inlicated. The meeting was called, and, out of about 50 promises, only five put In anR appearance. It is needless t, asay the convener was disgusted, but, fearing noth inr, he is again on the tratk, and by reference to another column it, will be seen that a public meeting is called for Wednesday evening next, in -the cnm imittee room of the shire hall,. wheii it-is hope,! that all those inasympathy-with the forward movement will be present, and, befor...

gq ~adra & Pqa %tandagd PUBI3L1SIIED EVERY FRIDA Y. NEC TEMXER NEC TIMIDUE FRIDAY. DECEMBER 10, 1909. THE New South Wales Governmcnt still persist in showing the world how "not to do it" in connection with the coal strike. The arrest of prominent otlicials of the unions on Saturday last can only be regarded as a foolish attempt to solve the problem. Affairs have now assumed a very grave aspect, and it would be a difficult matter for anyone to forecast the immediate fu ture and to tell us what will be the result of such action. It is true, how ever, that the three officiali, Messrs. Bowling, Brennan and Burns, were liberated soon after arrest on bail, but that does not nullify the fact that they are under arrest. It is hardly fair, however, that opponents of the Govern ment, now that some definite action has been taken, should make haste to declare with all the publicity they are cabable of, that " the strike would have been ended in a few weeks if the Government had not acte...
