FREE TRADE FREAKS. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 20 May 1887

FRISK-TRADE FREAKS. The antics of tho self-appointed apostle of Free-trade and his various disciples are certainly some excuso for the etone walling tactics of the members on the Opposition benches and others, and it won Id well have become Sir Henry Parses to have left the ' three-feet rule ' alone and satisfied the country sis to what Free-trado is and. what' is Protection. There appears to be a strong diversity of opinion on this question, even in the Free-trado citadel — the association, of which Mr. Pulbford is the main ' outward and visible sign,' and the effect of the condemned oratory of the minority in members has not only had its effect on the Government but upon the outside public. The Colonial Treasurer has been talked into perceiving the fact that he has egregiously blundered in his pet tariff proposals, especially in taxing raw materials, and admitting the articles they would be used for free. As Mr. Pulsford, in a letter to Mr. Burns, says, '.the result of such a poli...

Australian Trade with China. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 20 May 1887

-Australian Trade with Clii -a. A RECENT writer, speaking of the attempt to create a market for Australian wool in China, has deprecated the undertaking as a fruitless occupation and a waste of time and energy. Chinamen, it seems, are great weavers of silks and satins, but they have done very_ little in the way of spinning and - and weaving wool. Australians, however, Kr AcfnVtl l aVii n o» fflnlnriao {av nAainni* n# 'serge and dannel, may dispose of their wool at profitable rates. Labour in China is cheap, and there is therefore every prospect of ; making such factories pay. j The Chinese, as a nation, are fond of wearing furs, and the colonies might dis pose of large quantities of rabbit-skins, if properly dressed, for making up into '' warm garments. Very little wheat is grown in tho south of China, and if the Australians will only try to plaoe good j flour on the market at reasonable retail I prices, thoy are likely, to find much en -oourugement. At present Californian flour bro...

What Drainage Does. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 27 May 1887

[?] What drainage, does fpr.land.jaud .\diat tlio many imagine .it does,, are squen widely different; tliingk \Vhat is direfctfy effected by drainage is only a link in the chain of causation, leading, up, to the in direct influences, which are essential tS plant 'life afadi vigour. Land ; sqdden with water is to that extent exclusive of air particles; and although' earthy matter is essential to securely anchpr.a plant , in any place, 'unless that earthy' matter ' is porous it will hardly sustain the plant life, and to the extent that it is so, will bo its capability of promoting .vigorous plant life.
