For the Men on the Land; ilr. J. Hull, of the 13-mile Drain! Garfield, has some excellent seed potatoes (Carmen and Factors) for sale. At Woondarra, a blackberry-infested locality up Walhalla way, Angora goats Lave been introduced, and'are going strong in the matter of eradicating the pest. On Tuesday next, October 20th, a truck consigned to the Victorian Producers' Co-operative Company will be loaded with pigs and ealve6 at the Garfield station. Mr. \V. Hobson will be in charge of the truck. Around Neerim' some of the onion crops have been very prolific, yielding as high as 22 tons per aci-c. The' average crop is about 12 tons. News and Notes. Mrs. Christina Wighton, a colonist of 69 years, was fouud dead in bed at Cohana ou Tuesday morning. Franz Albrecht, who for 56 years carried on a butchering at Talbot, has died at the age of 82 years. At Lilydale Court H. B. Smith was fined 5/, with £2 costs, for having cut timber in a forest reserve at Silvin without a licence. Early on Tuesday morning ton business places wero destroyed by tiro at Manilla (N.S.VV.) The damage is estimated at over £5000. The Pioneer Butter Factory at Cobden, ■ which is said to be the oldest in Victoria, has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. " Monac," the Marvel, who visited Bunyip some months ago, and successfully toured Gippeland, is returning to Melbourne, :and -will • play Bunyip in the hall as V stated above. He will give a display of muscle control, and members of. his company will perform weight-lifting and wrestling. Sir,—We have received a number, of letters from Kooweerup residents, presumably readers of the " Free Press," in which they ask two or three important questions in reference to the use of lime. We have taken the liberty . of replying to thcBe questions, in a general letter, through yonr widely-circulated journal:— Ploughing in Lime. Lime has a tendency to sink into the soil of its own accord, and for that reason should not bo ploughed in I it should be spread on the ploughed land, and lightly harrowed in. William Martinson, agod 63 years, has died in the Molbourne Hospital as the mult of injuries sustained by a fall from a horse at Sunbury. Mr. A. C. Miokle, formerly of Camperdown, has been appointed as engineer of Glenelg Shire (Castorton) at a salary of £350 per annum. ConBtablo Hooley, of Redan, who died suddenly on Saturday last, was a native of Ballarat, and weighed 19 stone. He leaves a wife and eleven children. News and Notes. Mr. H. J. Woodhead, an inspector of the Colonial Bank, who resided at St. Hilda, died saddonly at Hamilton last Friday evening. Maud Barke, who was knooked down by a motor-car at St. Kilda a fortnight ago, has died in the Alfred Hospital. At the Dandenong police court last Tuesday Charles Wm. Spooner was fined £5, without costs, for having the bar door of his hotel open at 12.30 on the night of September 20th. It is stated that 51 r. Kelleher, the rabbit inspector for tho Pakenham district, which inclndes the shires of Berwick, Dandenong, Cianbourne and Ferntree Gully, has resigned from the position. Constable Helrir arrested a man named Griffiths at Berwick, and he was sentenced to a month's imprison ment on a charge of having no visible means of support.
