The Souther Morning Herald WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1923. TAX FREE BONDS. [Newspaper Article] — Southern Morning Herald — 24 January 1923

Sou%rn WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 1923. TAX FREE BONDS. It is freely asserted in Melbourne that the Treasurer, of New South Wales, M. A. C. Cocks, has been discussing the advisability of adopting the principlo of tax free bonds for State loans. It is assumed that if bonds are issued -at a reasonable rate of interest and made free of income tax, that Australian investors will readily absorb them. The contention is easily borne out by the fact that, tax free securities arc eagerly sought on the Stock Exchange. There is little doubt that if New South Wales attempts' to float a loan by these meajis, that quite a considerable amount of succcss will uttend their efforts. It is neccssnry however to examine the elfcct of an extensive application of this principle. The Commonwealth adopted the system, with the result that men with very large income* took full advantage of the opportunity to acquire this class of security and evade the higher forms of tnxation which they would have come under.
