Notes on Current Events. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 September 1880

Notes on Current Events. THE Wintonmail bag was loet lost week, one of the pack horses Laving bolted into Uic bush. A block tracker is in search of the bag. Western stations cannot get enough shear ers this season. It is estimated that the number of sheep to be shorn this yonr oa the, Barcoo alone is three-tenths more than last. Captain Penncfotlicr has been exploring the Batavin and Archer Hi vera, north of, Cooktoivn. Both, it is mported, are admir ably adapted for sugar growing. The blacks ; are plentiful, sod will come in handy to col- j tivnte the cane. I Some people at Aramac have been break- j ing down the elation fences on the Beserve. This will probably result in the station owners impounding cattle belonging to townspeople. A man named Williams had to pay £2 10s. at Aramac last week for breaking five shil lings worth of crockery. Ur. Kingsford's constituents are mcmoral jsing their Member calling upon him to resign. Some children ^it Maryborough have been " playing the Kel...

AFFAIRS MUNICIPAL. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 September 1880

AFFAIRS MUNICIPAL. TO THE EDITOR, Sib,-rermit me\tlirough the columns of your journal to draw attention to the extra ordinary decision arrived at by the P.M. | with reference to the appeal cases against the valuation of freehold property on the 26th instant. Had a regular tax with Tetcr cnce to frontage properties, and a minor one as regards back allotments, been strictly adhered to I should have been the last to have made any remark. The most glaring case was the assessment of two suburban allotments, which were reduced from £800 to £98 6dd. The term suburban was applied to this hind wlicn there were only about 20 inhabitants in the town-two shanties and a jam store represented the total buildings. From the first erected shanty, which after wards developed into the leading hotel in town, the land in question is distant chains, the Court House 1b distant from the land about 26 chains, the Fast and Office several chains further away, quoted Is still acknowledged to be business site i...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 September 1880

TO THE EDITOR. Sin,-I understand that n grfiat m.my (cams have contracted to bring Uicir wool to this township during the present season, and there is a report going about that carriers after delivering their down loading here nil] have to proceed to Emerald to take their up country goods. Now if the old road from Tombo to the Comet is good enough to tend down loading by, why forward up country loading to Emerald, paying trainagc for twenty-five miles, and delaying goods frt Emerald until carriers can arrive from the Comet 1 Bond carriage to Tombo or Black all is the same price whether loading goen from Emerald or tlifi Comet, and our old road has this advantage: carriers know it { and can easily find water. If report is cor rect the new road is very scantily provided with the latter. For my part I feel con vinced that should teams come in here wc shall have the un-conntry loading as for I mcrlv. -I remain, Yours truly, CAItRlIStt. Comet, 20th August, 1680.

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPACIAL CORRESPONDENT. August 20. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 1 September 1880

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FBOM ODB BPSOIAL COBBBSPONDBNT. August 20. THE debate on the Financial Statement was a decidedly acrimonious one. An ortiale in the Omrier which M'li wraith accused Douglas, and Palmer said that Dickson had written, famished much of the text for the debate. Tlie Premier was very angry at being accused of taking money out of loan to cover his deficit, and explained that he «va» and he wasn't going to do it, that the money in fact was to be got in a perfectly proper manner. They ell accused Qriffith and the Opposition of being thoroughly sold and mad beoause they had no opportunity of crying out against the taxation of the poor man's loaf, &«., too. On the seoond day of the dis cussion, Griffith moved an amendment of which you will have the terms. There was a prolonged squabble on the technical point whether it could be put in committee of Ways and Means, and that being settled they went on discussing it. l'almcr made one of bis slashing "Want of confidence d...
