_COTJKTBBFKIT ON THE BANK 07 NoHTBtTJMBBE-^_D. —Within a few days past a number ol _wunterfeit five dollar notes on the B_^nk of Northumbeiland were put into circulation in this place. They were dated _February —, 1856, and _tigned by J. R. Priestly, Cashier, and John Taggart, President. It is well to observe that Mr. Taggart signed no notes since December, 1854, and retired from office in 1855. These notes are circulated to deceive inexperienced persone. The paper is rather light, abd the shading over the vignett_?, under the _wbrda "Bank of Northumberland," is too heavy. The paper in the spurious notes is white, not the colored paper now used. A Few _TaouoHTa by thb _Waysidb.—Seated in a p _^ oeition to look at things geuer.-illy, and more particularly the dry goods tra'rta, we have been compelled to remark the wide difference existing in the manner of doing business. Some onyera seem to think that the _getting of goods cheap, cont-i8ts in the merchant asking a price ami then making an abatement of perhaps one half, while o_>hers appear to be sat sued no matter what theptjee may be if the teller will only throw in the trimmings. Did it ever occur to the purchaser that the men hint had to p*y f _jr all those things put into the bargain, or would it be strange if be charged the .parchaser more for tbe goods? The cheap dry goods house of C. L. Bowman think it their interest to "dispose of goods at a very small profit, for cawA,-and dp nut resort to artifice tor the purpose of clouding the mind of the buyer.
