THE TWO DESTINIES . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 17 April 1886
THE TWO DESTINIES . BY WIIaKIE COIalalNSa AUTHOR OP WOMAN IN WHITE , NBW MAGDALEN . MOONSTONE . ETC . CHAPTER XXXVII . —CONTINUED . The money I had with me was mostly composed of notes of the Bank of England . Carefully keeping up appearances , I set aside the sum that would probably be required to take a traveler back to London ; and I put all that remained Into the hands of Mrs . Van Brandt . Could she suspect me of a design on her lite now ? That will do for the present , I said . I can communicate with you ln the future through Messrs . Van Brandt of Amsterdam . She took the money mechanically . Her hand trembled ; her eyes met mine with a look of piteous entreaty . She tried to revive my old tenderness for her ; she made a last appeal to my forbearance and consideration . We may part friends , she said , in low , trembling tones . And as friends we may meet again , when time haB taught you to think forgivingly of what has passed between us toShe offered me her hand . I looked a...

The Middleman . —With a Story . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 17 April 1886
The Middleman . —With a Story . Many thanks for your kind information on the plantain question , as well as your promptness in replying to the remainder of note to you . I shall oertainly renew my adherence to the FARM , FIELD AND STOCKMAN before my year runs out , and think that the Co-operative Club will be a benefit to a great many of the same craft as myself ; for I take it to be one of the prime causes of the ill success of profits in farming , that there are so many middlemen to handle our products , and that is done away with in the Cooperative Club . In Philadelphia there is a piece of statuary , whioh will illustrate the middleman and his methods , as well as the results of having him go between us farmers and the consumers of our products , and it is this : A fine specimen of a well fed , first-class Jersey cow ; two farmers having a dispute about the ownership of said animal apply to a lawyer . Lawyer , or middleman , jumped the situation at once . Said he , Farmer A , ta...

Economy in Road Making . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 24 April 1886
Economy in Road Making . It would seem unnecessary to continue in the direction to which the FARM , FIELD AND S TOCKMAN has given so much attention lately as to the economy of road making by machw r ery . That question is settled permanently by the popular verdict of practical men , in favor of machine work . We this week present an illustration of the road grader of the Eureka Manufacturing Company , Kock Falls , 111 ., showing the machine ready for work . It will be • shown at the convention of Road Commissioners at Springfield , on April 27 , in actual road making . If good earth roads can be made by machines in mountain regions , certainly they can be in prairie regions of only moderate gradeB . Mr . Richard Irby , the General Agent , Bureau of Immigration of Virginia , says : Even over high mountains good grades can be ob tained , and cites the instance of the pike leading from Millboro to the Warm Spring Mountain . He testifies that this has easier grades than many roads in Ea...
