KOREA IS NECESSARY * TO JAPAN . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 February 1904

KOREA IS NECESSARY * TO JAPAN . japan desires Korea because ner population is crowding the home island nnd must have a place in which to overflow ; because the climate , the soil the products , the environment generally , are little different from those ., t home , and hence would make an attractive place for this overflow . Also [ h 0 wants Korea because she cannot afford to have Korea in the possession of her archenemy , Russia . If Russia should take Korea , it would bring the Northern Bear to the very portals of , he household of Japan . On the other inml if Japan should take Korea , it would bring the little yellow man- to the borders of Manchuria . Neither one can well afford to go to war over Korea , or for any other cause ; neither can an / nation interested in the peace n ii , l future commercial possibilities of the Orient willingly consent that -war should 1 grow up between Japan and Russia over Korea , or from any other cause . ARE WE THE , PEOPLE ? [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 February 1904

ARE WE THE , PEOPLE ? When we say the people what do we mean ? Just what part of our 80 ,- 000 , 000 do we have in mind , or , rather , ought we to have in mind ? Obviously , practically all of the people —that is , of those who are actually or presumably or potentially efficient in the nation—must be included in those pursuing gainful occupations . Of such persons there are about 30 , 000 , 000—probably 31 , 000 , 000 by this time , as the figure is from the census of 1900 . But this includes many are under age and many women , neither class being , at least politically , efficient , though it would be a grave mistake to leave the latter out of the calculation in estimating public sentiment . Looking at the subdivisions of the gainfully employed we find 5 , 681 ,- 000 farmers , planters and the like , a trifle over 1 , 250 , 000 in the professions , about - 850 , 000 wholesale and retail merchants and traders , about 200 , 000 keepers of hotels , restaurants and the like , about 30...

RUSSIA COMPARED WITH JAPAN . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 February 1904

RUSSIA COMPARED WITH JAPAN . As to the relative strength of Russia and Japan available for the purpose of a land and naval war in the Orient , there Is considerable difference ot opinion . According to the military budget of Russia , her army would seem to be about 1 , 400 , 000 . According to the budget of the Japanese Empire , her army would seem to number about 140 , 000 , with a reserve of about 140 ,- 000 more . Many military writers , however , estimates Russia s military strength as in the neighborhood of 3 ,- 000 , 000 , and even higher , and some estimate the military strength of Japan as at 600 , 000 , and higher . As to the efficiency of the military organization of the two empires , critics differ . The naval strength of Japan is confessedly greater than the strength of Russia in Oriental waters . Russia has on the Asiatic station seven battleships , with one battleship , the Ossliabia , at present in the Mediterranean , which belongs to the Asiatic squadron , and anothe...

SUPPLY AND DEMAND . [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 February 1904

SUPPLY AND DEMAND . Among the notable developments of the year 1903 were further demonstrations of the fact that the law of supply and demand governs market values in the live stock industry . The receding of values from the abnormally high prices of 1902 was exactly in line with this law . A backward glance at history will show clearly , if facts be viewed in their proper relation , the constant operation of this law in all decades .
