The Futurity Idea [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

The Futurity Idea We may be pardoned for insisting tnat the Berkshire Futurity Show plan which we have devised aims primarily to benefit the breed . For that reason it should command the support of all Berkshire breeders . It is perfectly legitimate and proper that it should also redound in some measure to the benent of THE BERKSHIRE WORLD . If it shall accomplish for the breed what It is certain to do if taken adVantage of by breeders generally , the result from our point of view is certainly no more than we should modestly have a right to expect . Our advertisements surely have made clear the idea which it is intended to exploit in the Futurity plan , but we may here epitomize the chief features involved . Any Berkshire boar can be nominated In the 1911 Futurities by the payment of $ 1 . 00 to THE BERKSHIRE WORLD . Any two Berkshire sows can be nominated by paying $ 1 . 00 to THE BERKSHIRE WORLD . All pigs sired by nominated boars and out of nominated sows are eligible to the Futu...

Honor to Whom Honor is Due . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

Honor to Whom Honor is Due . In our December 1910 issue we made mention of the winnings of Hollingsworth and Frierson at the Louisiana State Fair , and in our comments on the winners failed to mention the fact that the first and second prize under-six-months boars , and the first and second prize under-six months gilts were bred by Mr . Geo . Epple , of Shreveport . This was an oversight on the part of our reporter , and we take pleasure in giving full credit to Mr . Epple for breeding such excellent animals as these four pigs , out of one litter . Mr . Epple also bred the sire and dam of this litter , and the pigs were characteristic of his line of breeding , having plenty of size with as much quality as anyone would ask for . Mr . Epple also bred the sire and Shreveport , but had sold these winning pigs to Messrs . Hollingsworth and Frierson some time before the fair . Mr . Epple is greatly interested in Berkshires and , as noted in our report of the Berkshire show at the Louisian...

A Model Berkshire as conceived by Mr . Custer . What do you think about it ? Write us . Clarlcsville , Texas . Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen—I am just in receipt of your recent favor , requesting ; that 1 send you something for publication regarding the Berkshire outlook in this section , Or - something about my hogs . : I am sending you a lead pencil drawing of a model Berkshire , drawn by myself , from the ideal type that I have in mind , and should you desire to reproduce same , in the Berkshire World you are at liberty to do so . I am not an artist by any means , and doubt my ability to ever draw another picture like the one that I am sending to you . Hope that you will not consider me egotistical when I say that I like this model picture better than any that I have seen so far . I have been shown the good and bad points of hogs by the well known Po-land-China breeder , H . B . Singleton , of McKinney , Texas , by the veteran Berkshire breeder , Geo . P . Lilla...

What Shall We Do About It ? [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 January 1911

What Shall We Do About It ? Gettysburg , Pa . The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —I received your letter of recent date relative to the Berkshire interests , and I would like to ask a question , after detailing the following circumstances : About a year ago I visited the largest Berkshire establishment in our neighborhood and bought two boar pigs . I judged them to be three or four months of age , but when the papers reached me I found they were but four weeks of age when I first saw them . Of course I knew that something was wrong , and I had to insist upon it until I found out the difficulty . I was informed that it was the intention to exhibit in the under-a-year class a litter mate to one of the pigs and that the date was set back , and I further understood that If I wanted to exhibit I would be compelled to do the same thing , as they all did it . This occurred a year ago at least , and you will understand that I have made no objection to it , but what is the...
