Mubscription: $1 Per Year. satered at the Post-Office at Opelousas, La., a, second class matter. WAR NEWS. "No War News" would be a more appropriate heading this week, as there has been an extraordinary dearth of news. The department at Washington has decided not to give out any news except that which has actually transpired. Too much scope had been allowed the newspaper correspondents, and important plans of the government had been thus given out, and per haps reached the enemy, before they could be executed. Now nearly all that appear in the papers are more conjectures, with very little foundation to rest on. The corres pondents have to send their papers something, however, even if they have to plan and fight battles themselves. The past week has been occupied in trying to locate the Spanish Cape do Verde fleet, which seems to beat anything afloat dodging. When S...

Eatered at the Post-OfOce at Opelousas, La., as second class matter. WAR NEWS. The battles of the past week, of which several occurred, were all planned and fought by newspaper reporters, independent of Uncle Sam and the Strategy Board. No blood was spilled, no moaning widows and orphans left behind, and such achievements will force the Hero of Manila to step back for the newspaper fraternity. In fact, there is no news to re port. The movements are being kept secret from the outside world, and no authentic news will come until the great battle which is momentarily expected to take place between the Spanish Cape de Verde squadron and the American squandron under Schley or Samp son occurs. The Spaniard is said to be bottled up in the harbor of Santiago, and to be unable to avoid a fight. The trash and contradictory statements published in t...

F MODERN SCIENCE. PreJdetions for the Twentieth Cen tury Are Bread. It may be that we are, with respeot to the coming century, in the same imma toure mental condition in which the peo ple of the eighteenth century were with regard to the nineteenth, says the Pop ular Science Monthly. If some one in the preceding century had dared to pre dict the wonderful achievements of the nineteenth, be would probably have been declared a fool, and treated as was Robert Mayer, in Germany, in this -entury, who, after the discovery of the law of the conservation of force, was put into an insane asylum. A lilke fate might befall the man who should dare now to cast a horoscope for the twen tieth century, and to predict the prog ress of the human mind in the various domains of scientific research. After all, those may be right who, in spite of all those acquisitions on which we so f5stly pride ourselves,. are of opinion that we are still moving in only the initial steps, in the leading strings of evol...
