NEW YORK, April 14. —The , spectacle of a woman, hardly more than girl, with a slx-months old baby in her arms, on trial for her life, was presented in Justice Blanchard's court today when Sarah Koten appeared to answer for the killing of Dr. Samuel Aus pitz. Attorneys for the defense an nounced that they would not at tempt to deny that their client killed Auspltz, but would base their defense on a plea of emo tional insanity. COUNCIL IN DEADLOCK There Is possibility of a dead lock In the city council next week on the election of a president. There are 16 solons and it takes nine to elect a president. If they divide evenly there will be no election. At present it looks like a close contest with the chances favoring Hawthorne. If he gets Rusell of the Eighth ward, ac cording to the way some of the councllmen cay they will line up, Hawthorne will have enough. If Lynn gets Russell It may make a tie. The way the politicians say they will line up will be Bell, Stewart, Rankln, Chapman, Hawley, Glb lett and Wllkeßon for Hawthorne aha Turnbull, Eberly, Kreger, Jamleson, Brand and Armstrong for Lynn. Both sides claim Rus sell. If there comes a tie it will give a dark horse « chance. In this event Turnbull would probably go after It, but It is doubtful if he could win out. Bell is an old hand at the business and he might tackle the job. Jamieson or Brand either one could proba bly get a bunch of votes and Brand mi...
