SOVI k BALLOO m . A Woman anad a Lon Ascend-and " Land ain the W'ater." Miss Helene Augusta narrates, in the Cincinnati Star ,anovel balloon voyage: In using gas made from hard coal we get a lifting power of from forty to forty-four pounds to each one thousand feet, while with soft coal, such as is used in Cincin nati, the lifting capacity is over twenty five to thirty pounds-a vast difference in a small balloon; and so, owing to this fact, I made the ascension instead of Professor Gilbert, at a few minutes after the time ad vertised-4:30 p. m.,-accompanied by one of the young lions of the Zoological gar den. This young fellow was a bother, as I owe .my dip in the Ohio river to his frantic ef forts to get out of the basket, he taking all of my time to keep him quiet. On enter ing the basket it was found necessary to leave the drag rope-a very valuable ad junct to a balloon in a landing-also a pail of water I wished to carry, and could only take my anchor and its rope attached, with ...

Grant Interviewed. Naw Yonx, Sept. 25.--the Herald's cor respondent writing from Edinburgh, Sept. 11th, gives an interesting interview with ben. Grant. The General stated that he would remain in Europe till after the ex biting time which surrounds the test of Hayes' policy, for the reason that if he were at home, he would be charged with having a hand in every kind of political maneuvering whether he had or not, and he wanted to banish politics from his mind until everything settled down. "I can say one thing," said the General, "that if I were at nome I should exert my influence as far as I could exert it in aid of Hayes' of reconciliation. The object aimed at is a noble one and I hope it will succeed." In answer to the remark that many Re publicans feared Hayes' course would de stroy the party, Grant said: "Never fear, I have always of late years had an abiding faith in the success of the Republican party at each election, not so much because it is always strongest with the people...

212 BiTN VYOLVNT.U. / A Flght With the Nes Peros at Cow Creek. Benton Record, Sept. s. The Benton volunteers, under command of Major Guido Ilges, who left town on the 21st instant, upon the sudden call for help from Mr. James Wells at Fort Clagett, returned home at noon of the 29th instant, having traveled about 325 miles and un dergone various hardships and dangers. There is one of the gallant little band miss ing-poor Ed. Bradley. He sleeps in peace on a barren hill in the Cow creek cafion; a mound of dirt, a few rocks, indicating to the passer-by the spot where a brave man fell in the discharge of his duty. The rest of our returned volunteers look well and hearty, and they are unanimous in the opin ion that with sufficient force they would have been able fc strike the death blow to the escaping Nez Perces. We will now endeavor to give A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE EIGHT DAYS' CAM PAION and its incidents, as related to us by one of the party': Sept.21-Major Ilges,7th Infantry, one en list...
