68 THE POLYNESIAN. SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 1853. ? LEGISLATING ON MORALS. Much of the popular clamor raised in modern times against legislating upon morals, as it ' is termed, is founded upon a misapprehension, or a misrepresentation of facts. There are disorgani zes in almost every country, and unfortunately Honolula is not entirely destitute of them, who represent as unwise, if not oppressive, all legislat ing upon questions of morals ; and that such legis lation is an infringement of private rights, or per sonal liberty. The advocates of these doctrines would sweep away the Penal Code, and throw the reins of pas sion upon the neck of vice, to run riot, and at will, through the whole range of crimes which are subversive of good morals. Their harrangues catch the popular ear, and sometimes, for the mo ment, assent is given to their notions. But, we imagine, the doctrine is too dangerous to carry with its utterance the conviction of the understanding, or the sober judgment of rea.son.-...
