Tile Partflc l -urlrl—K*lin. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

Tile Partflc l -urlrl—K*lin. This is the appellation of a document which • has been placed upon our table, printed upon a ' sheet of letter-paper over the signature of "James ' M. Crane, Kditor and proprietor." It is ! in point of fact a prospectus of a new Whig paper about to be. or as it asserts upon its face, already established in San Francisco. This circular is as it purports to be, an extin ordinary affair and wc cannot refrain from alluding to it in justice to ourselves and the existing newspaper press'of California, though without the slightest feelings of hostility or unfriendliness to its editor. We have heard it announced that a now newspaper was to be established in this city, and had hailed the announcement with pleasure, for envy has no share in our composition, and we only rejoiced that the prosperity of the country was so great as to induce others to embark in a kindred enterprise. Already established and in prosperous circumstances, we bad received sufficient encour...

The Keceut Murder. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

The Keceut Murder. We cannot refrain from saying a few words with regard to (lie recent and occurrence at the Bella I'nion which resulted in the death of one of the parties concerned, and the utter ruin und disgrace of the other participator of the affair.— The deceased has been represented as a mini and inoffensive young man, aud certainly, if we are to place any credence upon the testimony, Could not l>e considered in the light of the aggressor. The other participant, Withers, appears to have acted from the first moment of the affair which terminated in so melancholy a manner with the most perfect recklessness, for which we can account in no other way than by the presumption that he watt rendered an irrational being from the demon rum. We do not desire in the least to prejudge his case or to prejudice the community against him We have given the main portions of the evidence as taken before the Alcalde and at the Coroner's inquest, which "all who run mny read'' and from ...

■"illMlal fmiiyrfimi. [Newspaper Article] — Weekly Alta California — 29 December 1849

Editorial Correspondence San Jose, Dec. 16, 1849. I left San Francisco, after disappointment by the early sailing of the Mint, in the little steamboat Sacramento, at 2 p.m. yesterday. Although the sky looked threatening and the "white caps" promised an uneasy passage. we nevertheless came along safely and quietly by running close in shore. Our progress was very slow, though, and we were finally obliged to anchor at 10 p.m. inside of one of the headlands that make into the Bay. Although it blew heavily during the night and also rained, the little boat lay safety until morning. when we got up our anchor and reached the embarcadero at the new town of Alveso (Alviso), about 11 a.m. to-day. We found the Mint here, just ready to start on her return trip, she having made the passage up yesterday in about seven hours. The town of Alveso in likely to assume some importance now, and already there are a few houses and a storeship there. It is contemplated, also to build a railroad from there t...

Utom lite Saii«htlih Imluikln ! A bingle copy of tlio Pol i/msm n of November 24th is the* only paper we have received by a recent arrival from Honolulu, and this contains but little calculated to interest the world abroad. We perceive that the * turbulent waters" lashed into commotion by the French aggression of July last have not yet subsided, but the rumbling of the retiring storm is without force or effect, as no new disclosures appear to have been made. The M. Dillon correspondence is dragging its slow length along." and we fear that the displeasure of our neighbors will not soon ''burn out," judging from what the Polynesian publishes.
