Long. 1706 North Pecan, was appointed to the Board in 1961 by Governor Price Daniel, and has since been reappointed by Gov- ernors John Connally in 1967 and Preston Smith in 1973. Long has held the Board's Chairmanship in 196S and the Vice Chairmanship in 1964. A graduate of Victoria -ollege, the honoree serves is President of the First National Bank and is active in many civic organizations. Long was recipient of the 1962 "Most Worthy Citizen" of Bastrop Award. Long and his wife, Ida Lou, have two children and two grandchildren. With enough interested parents in this area, there may~be a small Montessori class opening by the first at the year. In spite of the recent popularity of Montessori schools, there are many parents who have never heard of the Montessori method. Those who think of it as a new experimental teaching method are surpris- ed to learn that Dr. Maria Montessori, who formulated this method, was born in 1870. A woman's liberation- ist before her time, she became Italy's first woman doctor. She later returned to the University of Rome to study philosophy, psy- chology, and anthropology, and in 1904 was appointed Professor of Anthropology. In 1907, her active life as an educator began.
