The I^ew York Sun, while lean- ing ever towards the Tex a# ami Pu- cilic scheme, blunders out the Allow- ing truth. A correspondent writing from Washington under date of Feb- ruary toth, sn\s: It is now pretty clear that if the south/ ernrmanagtrs ot the scheme foi* Govern- ment aid to a Pacific railway on tiie thirty- second parallel had, during the summer, eliminated Col. Kxaggerated View of the Amount in Cir- culation—Homo MynUjri© of tho Craft— A Daugor Ciroater in Appearance than Reality—Work of the Secret Service 1>1- v In ion [WashingtonOpr. New York Herald.] Officials of the Treasury deny the newspaper reports of extensive element of bogus ooin In our metallic circulating medium. The amount has been re- ported to bo as much as $2,000,000, but the Treasury officials believe that $5,000 is more than the reality. They do not deny, however, that the resumption of specie payments has given new life to the almost obsolete industry in this country—namely, the counterfeiting of coin. It is a curious faot that the imi- tation of a coiu currency is more exten- sively practiced by dishonest men than that of a paper circulation, especially of late years, when the engraving of pa- per money has become so elaborate as to be a work of art which the counter- feiter can hope to simulate only by the acquisition of th...
