Lower River Road. THE PROPOSED FLOOD GATES. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 14 November 1919

Lower River Road. THK l'KOPOSED FLOOD GATHS. Al Monday's meeting of the shire council a letter was re.nl from George H,'Smith, Thos, J. Howe, •Hawtkius &\ Sons, and Walter Head as follows :— " As intoreste'l parties we hereby pfotfes't against any further curtail ment of flood waters by means of flood gates on natural watercourses ou the Lower River Road. Our reasons for so protesting are : That by placing flcod gates at the bridges it will thiow the flood waters back on to our respective properties, thus causing more damage than otherwise if the water were allowed to follow iu its natural course. We consider that the advocates for the flood gates are adequately pro tected by llie amount of laised roads which have been recently made, and iu addition we think the cost of controlling same would throw more expense ou to we ratepayers, as well as eudaugeriug the new high road." The council decided to inform the landowners that they are not at present doing anything iu the matter...

Berrigan's Main Street Verandahs. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 14 November 1919

Berrigan's Main Street Verandahs. Chanter street, Berrigan, the township's main business thorough fare, suffers in appearance through having unusually wide footpaths ov.-r which some shop, veraudalis extend to the load kerbing, whilst the great majority only extend about half-way. It is stated that the building line of the properties is really eight feet short, so that if the building fronts were added to by that number of feet the footpaths would lie the regulation width. Besides being unsightly the veran dah poles standing iu mid footpath are a danger to pedestrians, more particularly on hot days and dark nights (Berrigan being without a stieet lighting system), and thiSs was borne home to the civic fathers last Monday, when the council was asked to defray the medical ex penses incurred by a local lady who suffered a nasty black eye by tun ning into a post one pitch-dark night. Legal opinion is being sought on the question as to liabili ty, council or owner, but the incident apart...

Local and General [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 14 November 1919

Local and General The increase of small citrus or chards ill Cobraiu during recent yeirs (writes the "Courier") has caused the owners thereof to see that without providing someiflici eut plan- for watering the trees their groves are doomed to failure, and therefore Uiey banded together some months ago aud approached the local Water Trust to devise a scheme for the purpose of irrigating their orchards from the town plant. The Water Trust. Commissioners were favorably disposed towards the proposal.if it could be carried out without interfering with the town service, aud on ascertaining the cost of a separate supply tank and new mains for extensions it was estimated th.it a sum ,£2000 would be required. A cheaper scheme \yas sought for, and Mr Kelly de vised a proposal to put down a concrete-lined surface tank 011 top of the hill at water tower, aud to use re-inforced earthenware pipes instead; of east iron, tile cost of which would be ^GOO to supply an area embracing about 35 acres. M Halsalle relates bow the Munich newspapers, not long ago, recorded with appreciation the death of an old man of eighty who had often been known to drink 100 mugs of beer (about ninety pints) in ono day. I Special Importance I Column. Wfl invit* rpaVlors to forward nloug for publication any idoaa or proposals cal culated to advanco tlio intorostd of Toeurawftl and Diutrict. A WJovo Made With . Wafer Supply. The Government enginei r's re port on the proposed reticulation of Tocumwal township is generally favorable. The total cost is set out approximately at ,£10,700, and the imposition of a 6d. rate on U.C.V. will briu~ in sufficient revenue to defray working expenses and re demption. There should be found very few ratepayers to cavil at this proposition. Everyone regards the future prosperity of Tocumwal as dependent on its water scheme. And there is good cause for this belief. The township is woefully under-housed, and one of the main factors against buildings going up is the lack of water. Township blocks are unconscionably dear, but when in addition a large sum has to be spent in putting down a well to assure water for ordinary domestic purposes, then it becomes out of the questi...
