BOWLING. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 January 1900

BOWLINi. On . Wednesday - afternoon,.. the IAuburn bowlers visited Healesviile and engaged the local players at. ,a game of bowls. The day was rather inpleasant for bowling, the heat being tpo oppressive. The visitors arrived. by the 2.20 train, and brought only' 10 players.... The local club were not: so fortunate, and could only muster nine, and one. of the visitors had to: wait until another- player put in an appearance before -he could take part in the match. Shortly after a start was made a downpour of rain took place, which made-it, necessary for the players to leav.e-the ground for a time, and it was cliought that the match would have to be abandoned, but the rain ceasedi, and the inatch was con-, eluded u.der. slightly altered weather conditidns. Each rink of the visitors succeeded in outclassing the locals, and at the finish had a majority of 29 to their credit. ..Scores: AUBURN. No. 1 Rink~ =Messrs. F. Walsh,, S. Pater noster, T. .Thomnas,. The Indian hasehall player, Walla Tonka, has received a new lease of life. In accordance with Indian law, he was to have been shot at sunrise :on the 27th, upon conviction for murder; hut a reprieve.arrived ijust in time. The most impressive fact about this case, more impressi;e .than the dramatic postponement of the execution, is that the culprit, has been at large all tihe time since his conviction, and when the data for his execution arri'ed he re deemed his promise toL.the authorities by appe arin- voluntarily at the execu cution grounds. Nor is his case in this.respect peculiar. All Indians uinder capital sentence are set at liberty upon. promisin', to appear for execution ; and the promise is .never~ broken. Anaclo Saxous boast their superiority to the Indian, but few of them- could be trusted to keep such n appointiment.

GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 January 1900

GELNERAL NEWTS. A question that has come very forc ibly under our notice at the present season of the year, and more so than in the past, is the lace of support ac corded to the local bowling, tennis, and croquet clubs. The reserve that these clubs huve control of is a very picturesque spot, and one that visitors spend many a pleasant afternoon on, but the support given for the up-keep of the court and greens by those who benefit to the greatest extent by the influx of visitors-the hotels and those who afford accommodation for tourists, the latter being a great number-is very meagre. This is to be regretted, as the expense falls on a few, with the help of small donations from visitors who feel so incrined. We understand that an offer was made some time ago to those who cater for the wants of visitors that for a certain sum the guests staying at their respective estab lishments would be allowed the privi lege of using the courts and greens, but the proposal did not " catch-on." Why i...

TOOLANGI. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 January 1900

TOOLANGI. -:o:- (From our Correspondent.) An unpleasant contretemps occurred here on Sunday last in connection with our regular monthly church service held by the Rev. E. S. Chase. For some reason, best known to himself, Mr. Tylee, who has also lately held service here, decided to clash with Mr. Chase, the consequence being, that both met at the.school house to conduct,a service. But, Mr,. Tylee, evidently more cunning in such matters, secured the key of the building prior to Mr. Chase's arrival, and refused to hand it over when asked to do so. To avoid a quarrel, Mr. Chase immediately left, as did also those who had assembled to hear him. But Mr. Tylee, determined   to see it through, held service, which was attended by three of the residents. Great inidignation is felt here on the matter, for apart from the unwarrant able intrusion. on Mr. Tylee's part, it hardly becomes one professing to teach the gospel to wilfully endeavor to bring religious dissension into a small...
