Sporting. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 25 March 1901

Spurting. [By Sterling.] hA scratch match was played in the park on Saturday afternoon between teams chosen by Messrs H. Cleary and H. Cross. The game resulted in an easy win for Cleary's contingent who batted first and put 148-j-uns together. W. O'Hanlon and J. Dillon retired for 30 apiece, while A. Norton and D. Fowler contributed 1 fi and 1 9 racr»». tively. The batting of Dillon and O'Hanlon was a treat to witness, both men executing and timing the strokes to perfection, and playing all round the wicket Dillon knocked two fours and a five oft one over. The way Harry Cross' force fell for 78 runs it would seem evident that Mat Armitagc was rocking lyditto or some other com bustible stuff into them. J. Shiels batted in a willin' style for 24, while the veteran skipper (Harry Cross) bat in bis usual way for i 5. The match for the local premiership between the Licensed Victuallers and Waradgery cricket clubs will be com menced in the park oval on Wednes day next. This should prove o...

Open Column Mr. Ashton's Defence. [TO THE EDITOR.] [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 25 March 1901

; Open \ Column : Mr. Ashton's Defence. . ? .. [toihe editor 1 Sir, — As one who had the 'honor.' (!) to be present on tho occasion of Mr. Ashton's npfefch .in Hfty on ''the 4th fnst:, will yon kindly allow me space in your valuable journal to pass one or two comments on some of that gentleman's -remarks in con nection with the Boer war, which he made during the evening. In Mr. .Ashton's attempt at an explanation regarding the position lie took with reference to tilie dig. pitch of troops 'from N.B.W. to South Africa, Mr. Aihton stated thatjie was charged with being a 'disloyalist' and a ' pro-Boer.' With rogarrl to that I venture to say that as far as Mr. Ashton's explana tion of his peculiar attitude on tliat ques tion goes, o.vcry large number of the elec tors of Rircrina are compeUed.to still look upon Mr. Ashton as such ; but I think Mr. Ashton is wrong when he Bays he was likened to Jimmy and Joe Governor, the murderer^. Nuts for Mr. Ashton's Followers to Crack. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 25 March 1901

Nuts for Mr. Ashton's Fol lowers to Di'jick (By Ballot Box.) That the great issue before the electors is not Freetrade versus Pro tection. That the tariff question has already been practically settled by the Federal Constitution. That all the Freetraders in this State, if elected, could not alter it. That the Protectionists would be in the same position. That Mr. Ashtbn should be rejected by this electorate. ~ — That his rejection would do him good. , That the adulation -b£ his blind wor shippers in this electorate has helped to bring about his political ruin. That good wine needs no bush. That Mr. Ashton's supporters must feel very frightened, or the columns of our contemporary would not be crowded with a host of Mr. Ashton's imaginary political virtues. v That Mr. Ashton has forfeited tbe support of many of his former political friends. That this is proved by the constitu- ' tion of his committee, and the con spicuous absence of many leading men. Tliat the said leading men have su...
