Local and General News. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 12 August 1864
goal anlzu 5tera1 fsr . BroGLr.uEs.-Every now and then this crime makes itself felt among our store keepers pretty severely, and then again all goes on as though every man among us is perfectly honest. There is every reason to believe that this crime is exclusively monop olised by one or two parties; they visit one or two places of business and then subside till people begin to think themselves safe, when they make another attempt. During the last week two attempts have been made, one of them has proved successful. On the night of Monday last, the store of Mr. Jones at Costerfield, was broken into and about £40 worth of property stolen, among which was fifty or sixty yards of fine flannel, fifteen pairs of blankets, twelve pairs of tweed trousers, five coats, twenty-five pairs of boots, some towelling and other articles. The boots are branded T. B. on the heel or sole, and are, we hear, of a superior quality. We hope that the bulky nature of the property may lead to detection. On Sa...

AL. the Land Bill battles that have been fought from-the days of the Convention down to the time of the last kick of the Legislative Council, have proved defeats to the people, and have checked the progress of the country. The only eoncession which it has been-possible to wring from the firm grasp of monopoly, -is a certain amount of commonage, and this is no doubt regarded with envy by those whom sophistry and selfishness -have taught to look upon them selves as the only legitimate occupiers of the lands of this country. The commons are a compromise between free grass and no grass. They are the only items which are placed to the credit of the country on the balance sheet, of struggles for a liberal land system in Victoria, while on the other side, every thing that can disgrace a country may 'be set down. Many of those who fought hard and honestly for the people on the land question are worn out, have left the country, orhave died. They have been pelted with dirt, as it were, writte...
