Finley. December 21. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 23 December 1898

l?inley. - December 21. So . little .of importance haying occurred of late, I have been at a loss for material to work on, However, . I am pleased to say the spell has been broken, apart from the cheer ing, -effect of seeing loads of wheat, being carted ;;to: the railway station. I think ? farmers are becoming, more reconciled to their losses, which to say tile least have been very great, particularly at Springfield -and. Booroobanilly, -.where crops are a total ' failure. Finley folk are pleased with Mr. Wm. Blair's appointment lis J.P., though there is much regret that the: local nominee, .Mr. -Marshell, .was not also appointed as recom , mended by our Proaress Association. ?v. .-.-An: event occur- ed last week .fraught with a, deal of significance. to the district at large, viz., arrival of Mr. Gardiner,^ contractor for ,the artesian -bore: i rTho boring plant is ex 'pected.to be in full-swing enrly next month, s when Mr. Gardiner's efforts will be looked forward to with ' the gr...

DISTRICT NEWS. Daysdale, December 21. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 23 December 1898

?DISTRICT NEWS. ?i - [From Our Own Correspondents,] Daysdale. Decetnber21. Sitwe my last some of the townspeople, in consequence of tho scarcuy of water, have bailtd out an old well in the township 190 feet deep, which had about 45 feet of very strong smelling water in it. The water was run, into Mr. R, Armour's tank, and I be lieve the cattle and horses are taking to it well now that it has been in the open air for a time. Mr. Stewart went down the well on Saturday, and reports that the tim ber is in good order. There is now some talk of raising money to bore or sink in the bottom to try for a greater supnlv of water. Several lots of cattle and sheep have passed lately en route for the mountain country. - At the Police Court on 15th inst., before Messrs. W. H. Castle and G. J. Johnston, J's.P,, Arthur Robortson, a drover, who was summoned by Constable Bulmer for leaving a dead calf on a public road at Daysdale, pleaded guilty and was fined 10s,- costs of burning 5s, and costs of co...

CHRISTMAS. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 23 December 1898

' CHRISTMAS. At one time it was ? thought by maiiy people that the keeping of Christinas would, in the course of time, become a lost art among us. Tho age'was nearly pnst, it was said, nnd sentiment and cinvniry wore so luncii on tne decline that tho observance of Christmas cus toms would die a natural death. But it is evident to us now that these fears were groundless, and year ky year the pleaBant memories and observances of this social season come back with all its freshness and pleasant excitement of our youthful clays. Tlio fact is, religion social customs, national sentiment, and even trade enterprise, all help to per potuate tho observance of Christmas as a great Christian and national festival. The latter especially makes itself felt in these days in every walk of life, for the complications of trade have in these ' Jays interwoven themselves with the affairs of all mankiud. It is .the financiers and the men of commerce who at -the present time are to a large extent the arbi...

THAT SQUARE OF GLASS. TO THE EDITOlt OP THK HERALD. Sin, — In the last issue of your paper I am accused of trying to extoit money from our Hospital by making an cxhorbitant charge for putting in one square of glass. Such being the case, I crave a small space in your paper to set myself right in tlio eyes of the miblic bv exnlninintr the mistake to them. Now. Sir, I was requested to go to the Hospital and put in a window — not a square oE glass alone, but a window which had been blown clean out of the brickwork and both squares broken. Well, sir, the facts are these : — I went on the morning of tho 24th November in the teeth of a gale of wind to do the work, laying aside my work nt the church, where it was comfortable, to oblige the committee and to make the people in side comfortable. I had to plug and fix the frame, same as in any new building. After doing this I had to return to town to get that dinbolical square of glass which has caused that gentleman (I beg his pardon, I did no...
