SIGNS OF A GOOD LAYER Points Poulirymen Look For The main outward Indications of a good layer are large, prominent eyes, giving an. alert appearance, face free from wrinkles and undue feathering, skull fairly fine yet strong, body deep and wide snowing capacity and stamina, and an active robust appearance. Upon bslng handled, the abdomen of birds which are in laying1 condition should ft: *w»i aiiu nuiv, ii ic am 11 O5LOg Oi HIlTT texture and the pelvic bones fairly wide apart, thin and pliable; but too much ? stress should not be placed upon the ? condition of the pelvic bones, as many good layers would not stand up to such a test as applied by those who rely mainly upon this factor In selection. Mass Slaughter POULTRY REVOLUTION [Newspaper Article] — The Broadcaster — 3 October 1935

Mass Slaughter POULTRY REVOLUTION Chicken sexing has revolutionised Uie poultry industry, and it has not been a bloodless revolution. When (be first Japanese experts visited Australia, chickens sexed at demonstra tions were killed to psrmit of post-mortem verification of the accuracy of the en pews. Hundreds more were killed during the Training of local men in the art. Countless hundreds and nossiblv thous ands died through inattention after their sale for Id each. The poultry fanner was only too glad lo get rid of the unwanted cockerels at any price. Now the price does not enter into ' it. and the masti slaughter has commenced. Recently a prominent Blacktown dis trict poultry farmer drowned more than 1000 male day-old chickens rather than go to the expense of rearing for the table. White cockerels make poor table birds althragh'the female of tile species is an excellent layer. Numerous other poultry farmers arc destroying those 'sexed' as male.
