TOO OLD TO WORK. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 25 August 1900

TO© ©LD T© WORK. Sydney ' Daily Telegfaph ' (which The People will in future designate the ' Daily Trimmer ') iB subject to spasmodic outbreaks both economical and humanitarian. Last week, under the above heading, it spoke as follows : ' The Gculburn Municipal Council have decided to give all their em ployees a month e notice of dismissal, and invite applicants for the places vacated at a wage-rate increased by one shilling per day. 1 he object in view is that of relieving the Council of the burden of paying men who have long been in its employ and are too old to earn the money paid them. It may be admitted that, according to ' cold economic law, the Council ib act ing rightly. It is not a cHaritable in- . stitution, but a body of trustees of public funds, whose duty is to return to the ratepayers the best possible value in local improvement! for their -enforced contributions. And their idea that this can ba done by engaging a staff of more competent workers at higher pay will proba...

AT HEADQUARTERS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 25 August 1900

AT HEADQUARTERS. ' Treacherous Toleration, Faddist and Fakir,' was the subject on which Comrade Moroney addressed the audience at viarx Hall, Sydney, on Sunday night last. The propagandist who deals in per sonalities and hita hard, especially on I 1001 questions, is more ugeiy co do successful than the man who treats his audiences to cold ecuQpmic exposi tions, said the lecturer, and unsparing denunciation of the men who have proved false to their avowed princi ples, or who have displayed reac tionary tendencies, has ever been a characteristic of the determined So cialist throughout the world, and the correctness of this attitude has been exemplified |by recent developments in the European movement. In Ger many the Socialist party has been a . militant and growing body since '48, 1 ana was tne oniy party aDie to aery and defeat the iron Chancellor, Bis marck, and its success has undoub tedly been due to its uncompromising attitude. To-day, however, there is a reactionary party who d...
