THE GIRL OF THE FUTURE. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 15 June 1917

THE GIRL OF THE FUTURE. Does it ever strike you, in these war time days, what a difference the war and its incidental work, sorrow, and anxiety have made in the outlook on life of the average girl? How the happenings of the past three years have altered things for her! How really wonderful she is! It is so easy to take things for granted; so easy for us, 'the older women, who, it may reasonably be supposed, have had our share of the brightness of life, of the interests, the everyday pleasures, the joy of being alive and well and happy in a normal world. But our girls who have never had any girlhood, who have ^pever experienced the joy of 'growing up'! In the pre-war days 'putting up one's hair' was an event fraught with the keenest interest, and 'coming out' choosing one's first ball gown and wearing it! What woman is ever too old or too. blase to 'forget the utter joy of it all? Is there a woman amongst us to whom the scent of wattle does not bring memories of some jolly picnic; th...

WOODCARVING AND RAFIA. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 15 June 1917

WOODCARVING AND RAFIA. Here, in a sunny corner of the veran dah, a boy in an invalid chair works away at a piece of carving. He can only use one hand, but is managing ibeau- j tifully, and 'has already finished a picture frame artd started on a handkerchief-box. In the railway, ward basketwork in rafia is the first favorite, and the cutest little baskets are fashioned in the battalion colors or in the tricolor. Mrs. Pearson, who is convener of the arts and crafts classes, is always there on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after noons, and she and her lieutenant, Mrs. Fred Barlow, go from ward to ward in structing and helping beginners. POKER WORK AND TOYS. At the workshop, which is near the recreation room^tnd buffet, the scene on these afternoons is the busiest possible. In one corner poker work is being taught, and at another bench carving, while at another Miss Macauley Turner superintends the making of the quaintest little toys in fretwork. Miss Turner does the designs, and as mod...

RED CROSS INDUSTRIES AT THE BASE HOSPITAL. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 15 June 1917

RED CROSS INDUSTRIES AT THE BASE HOSPITAL. Unless you go very often to the Base Hospital and have many friends there, unless you have talked to the boys wlio have been there so long, and know what the long weeks and months of confine ment mean to them, how wearisome the days can be, you can not in the least realise all that this new scheme of the Red Cross Society means. The Base Hospital at Kangaroo Point has become home to many of our sol . diers; they have been there for many weeks, and are likely, some of them, poor lads, to be there many weeks longer. There is never any doubt about their happiness — that is so far as the kindness and attention of nurses and visitors can ?make for happiness — but to men who are -brave enough and manly enough to do the men's' work which they have done we all know that these weeks of inaction m hospital must be at times almost un bearable — must put a strain on their bravery and endurance far greater even than that of the actual fighting. , And so...

STRAIGHT TALK. RETURNED OFFICER HITS HARD. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 15 June 1917

STRAIGHT TALK. RETURNED OFFICER HITS HARD. ' Lieut. Agassis, an officer who returned from France on Monday night last, gave the crowd in front of the G.P.O. some straight talk on Tuesday .afternoon and again »on Tuesday night. 'There are plenty of damned shirkers in this crowd,' said he. 'That is straight talk, and may hurt you, but I cannot help that. I am a soldier straight from 'France, and I am going back there again. If it is good enough for a married man like me to go back, it is good enough for you single shirkers. We read in the papers what the P.L.L. is going to do if they bring in conscription, and there is one blighter named Considine who, if he were in Lon don, would be shut'up in the Tower. Do you know that if there were no Union Jack flying here to-day you would prob ably ibe under the 'German flag getting about 3d a day like the mien in Belgium. What would be the good of your union then-? There is only one union to-day — the union of khaki. I have been a ?machine-gun ...

Training Disabled Soldiers. What France is Doing for her Wounded. [Newspaper Article] — National Leader — 15 June 1917

Training Disabled Soldiers. What France is Doing for her Wounded. A couple of weeks back we published an interesting article on the work of training disabled soldiers. The question was treated in a general way, and was published in order to bring under the notice of the responsible authorities the imperative necessity for immediate ac tion. It was pointed out that in Europe the disabled soldier is regarded as a valu able asset to the industrial machinery of the country, and in Prance and Germany no pains are spared to fit him for his future life. The French nation is face to face with problems of war of which the British nation and the Australian people are not yet fully conscious. The Hun is on French soil, and the number of kille'd and wounded among the French troops has been, up to the later stages of the war, vastly greater than among the British. As the army inqreases, how ever, and as the fighting 'becomes fiercer, the proportion of killed and wounded will become greater. As i...

The eldest brother in the firm of Henry Walker & Sons, the well-known Downs jewellers, Jack Walker was amone the first to enlist, and was in the landing. He was invalided to England, and after wards went to France, where he 'got it' in the leg. He was looking well, though decidedly war-worn, as he limped up the steps at the little ferry-house on Tues day morning. He was off home by the Western mail, Tand it is safe to 'say that his welcome in the Downs city was a rery warm one. * ? ? * * * . « They were .jam-making at the kitchen this week, and dozens of pots of marma lade were added to the already well filled shelves.
