AUSTRALIA ARMED. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 9 October 1896

AUSTRALIA ARMED. A N;umBER of articles, extending over a considerable time, have been appearing in the Argus, as our renders are aware, under the title of " Deeds that won the Empire," and, judging from the num bers of letters received from persons of education, and professional and cosser cial status, by the editor, expressing their high opinion of them, it would seem that they have "caught on," and are eagerly perused, and highly appreci ated by many members of the ccnnnunity. A few weeks ago the Age published a leader in which the alleged Jingoism and sanguinary word-psinting of the articles we are mentioning was repro bated in strong terms, and the fact pointed out that while the Argus writer dwelt fully on the "pomp and circum "stance of glorious war," ansI while he could write in thrilling sentences of the Rattling musketry, the clashing blade, Atd ever and anon in tones of thunde,. the ditpaion of the cannonade. He forgot to say anything concerning The loud laments anti disma...

"Sweet-to4he-gay ofa.enartissummern's Mile,r weet the wtil music of the laughing Spring." Thus Henry Kirke White, one of Britain's most sweetest of song writers, a:nd in, the hearts of the dwellers in tlhis beautiful land of ours thesn words find a responsive echo. And who more any of heart tlan those of us who follow the national and time-honored pastime that has spread itself over the length and breadth of the universe ? Scarcely has the hoarse shriek of tile football 'barracker" died away ere tho cry of " How's that, umpire," breaks upon our ears, and the white flannelled exponents of the one game that cannot be "squared" appear on the scene. How our hearts went out to those heroes of Australia in the mother country who have so splen didly upheld the prestige of their native land, and though unsuccessful in br...

CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. THE NORTH MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB. (To the Editor of the Courier.) [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 9 October 1896

CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. THE NORTH MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB. (To the Editor of the Courier.) Sin,-- ow that the mischief is done we obtain a reply from Delegate Mitchell. The flippancy of his opening remark is lost in the insult and injury he has been powerless to prevent being done to the olub. He twits me with a lack of cour age in not affixing my name to my letters. My answer is this: I see nothing to fear in speaking the truth on this question, and I have, therefore, subscribed myself as such, and have already said the ques tion is a public one, I decline to view it in the private light lie suggests. He goes on by soliciting material assistance, with the emphasis on the " material " it was ever thus. Were it not too late now I would point out the value of self reliance, and also an exercise on his part of that virtue which lie deplores a want of in me. At the risk of being accused of prying again, I would ask how...
