SAVINGS BANKS. [?] [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 6 February 1841

SAVINGS BANKS. [?] Twenty years ago, I remember living in a small town in which there was a banker, who was thought to be very rich. [?] before I went down stairs, I heard a loud crying and be- wailing in the house, and found it proceeded from           an old female servant of a lady with whom I was       a lodger. This faithful woman had lived with   her mistress since she was a girl, and was one of       the best servants in the world. Her dress was   always neat, but always plain. She seemed to   understand everything—brewing, baking, washing,       cooking:—nothing went on well if she was not a     helper in it. If an errand was to be gone, nobody went so quick as the old servant; and although     the had ofte...

[ADVERTISEMENT] TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGISTER. January 28th, 1841. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 6 February 1841

[ADVERTISEMENT.] TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGISTER. January 28th, 1841. I am, Gentlemen, yours respectfully. W.H.[?]. GENTLMEN— I am always gratified by any letters or a statements, whether from yourselves or correspondents, by which the world may be ap- prised of the increasing development of our [?]-national resources. Whether this evidence of sufficiency within ourselves regards agriculture or manufactures, it is alike pleasing. Your cor-   respondent belongs to the latter class, and hopes now, as he has always hoped, that South Aus-   tralia will one day become the seal of manufac-   tures for the Southern, and (to a great degree_ the Eastern world. Tis true that my depart- ment is a very humble one, but still it has, for the last sixteen months, worked up all the rate   materal which before that time was thrown to the pigs. It has done more; it has effectually re- gulated our heretofore fluctuating market; and &a...

THE COLONIES, [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 6 February 1841

THE COLONIES. THE British Colonies do not at all times entertain the most kindly feelings towards the Mother Country; but still they are generaly on much better terms with the old un than with each other   The Australian colonies, in particular, regard   each other with anything but loving-kindness,         and miss no opportunity to manifest their mutual   jealousy and ill-will. Ever since South Australia       has been a province, it has been assured by the     less liberal portion of the colonial press with a   violence and pertinacity that commands our ad- miration, and leaves us in doubt as to whose   stock of malignity is the greater, that of the   devils above board, or of those below. Over and     over again has the South Australian project been &nbs...

SHIPWRECKS. (From Wednesday's Chronicle.) [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 6 February 1841

SHIPWRECKS. (From Wednesday's Chronicle.) TOTAL WRECK OF THE SHIP "ISABELLA."— We have been kindly favored by Capt. Dickenson with the following account of the unfortunate loss of this vessel, bound from Calcutta and Port Adelaide to Sydney, with a valuable cargo:—The Isabella sailed from this place on the 10th De- cember. On the afternoon of Sunday, the 20th, underate breezes and cloudy weather, she was       running along King's Island, at the entrance to   Bass' Straits, about two leagues off the land. At two P.M., saw breakers on the starbouard bow;     sounded and found seven fathoms, and gradually deepening. At 4 P.M., light air and cloudy weather—land seven miles off. At 7 P.M., thunder and lightning. At 8, wind increasing,   and weather looking very threatening; double     reefed the topsails, and furled top-gallant-sails. At half-past 8, the S.W. point of Kin...

TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIA REGISTER. North Adelaide, February 3,1841. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 6 February 1841

TO THE EDITORS OF THE SOUTH AUSTRALIA REGISTER. North Adelaide, February 3,1841. I am, Gentlemen Your obedient servent, F.T.W. GENTLEMEN—I beg through the medium of your widely circulated journal, to call the attention of the "powers that be" to the state of the wooden bridge below the old jail. Some time ago the trunks of two trees were placed over the stream, and a hand-rail formed from side to side.     Some mischievous persons, however, have des-       troyed this, and the chain at the present time is corroding in the water. I think, with out sur-   plus labor, this dangerous spot might be protected at little cost, and a safe and commodious path-way made across this portion of the Torrens.   I am sure the authorities need but be reminded that crossing at this part of the river is far pre- terable to persons from many parts of the town to       the oth...

MARKETS. HOBART TOWN ,JANUARY 22. [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 13 February 1841

MARKETS. HOBART TOWN ,JANUARY 22. The business of the week in respect to imported good offers nothing worthy of remark, except that prices gene- rally are looking down. The continued dry weather has had a most disastrous effect upon the gardens, and all kinds of vegetables are scarce and dear. The millers also, being unable to work more three hours a day,   have risen the price of flour; but wheat continues the same. If any thing, lower, butcher's meat continues high; and unless we have speedily rain will be very bad.     Wheat, 8s to 9s per bushel; Oats, 4s 6d to 5s ditto. The South Australian Register. ADELAIDE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18,1841. GOVERNOR GAWLERS UNAUTHORISED [?] [Newspaper Article] — South Australian Register — 13 February 1841

The South Australian Register. ADELAIDE: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18,1841. GOVERNOR GAWLERS UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE. The Royal Mail brought the long expected and too long delayed intelligence, not only that the Colonization Commissioners had refused to sanction this unauthorised expendi- ture of Governor Gawler, but that they had adopted the extreme measure of dishonoring   the bils officially drawn by his Excellency as       Resident Commissioner. The holders of these   bills were informed, on their presentation, that     they could nto be accepted, the Commissioners   waiting instructions from the Lords of the   Treasury.—The protests returned to the co-     lony, and since officially intimated to Governor Gawler by the parties interested, bear the same reply. It has been ascertained, from the   date of these bills (March last), tha...
