SEMI-DETACHED BUILDINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 20 July 1914

_ ? ♦ ? . .- ?? SEMI-DETAGHED BUILDINGS. North Sydney Council (N.S.W.), which has two architects among its members, has; finally realised* the risks incurred in permitting 'the flouting of Ordinance -0 A, which lays down that party walls must be carried \:im. above the roof. The Sydney Fire Chief has said that it is essential, in order to prevent the spread of a fire, that this provision should be observed. North Sydney Council is not the only offender in this respect, but the recent publicity given to its negligence should have a salutary effect generally.

The Engineer in Local Government. VICTORIAN SECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 20 July 1914

The Engineer in Local Government. VICTORIAN SECTION. One of the clauses in the report of the conference between the Victorian State Section of the Institute of L.G. Engineers of Australasia and the Institute of Municipal Engineers of Victoria regarding amalgamation, is that the members of the former join the latter prior to the consideration of any scheme of amalgamation. The Federal President (J. M. Smail, MJnst.C.E.), has instructed that the Victorian Section be informed that such action would be contrary to established policy and would mean the sinking of the identity of the Vic torian State Section, thus interfering with the national character of the Institute.

WIDTH OF TYRES. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 20 July 1914

WIDTH OF TYRES. From L.G. Engineer Shine, Murrungal Shire (N.S.W.) :— The Shires Association's proposal as regards the registration fee is £1. for the first year, to be doubled each succeeding year for four years only, and at the expiration of that time every weight carrying vehicle to conform to the regulations, or get off the road, so that there can be no twelfth year. The draft regulation is worded in a very ambiguous way. There can be no doubt that the proposal is a Teasbnilble one,, as any carrier can exempt himself iivany of the four years -by putting on tyres of the regulation width.

THE CARPENTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 20 July 1914

THE CARPENTERS. judge l£dmunds. in dealing Avith the applications by the Master Builders' Association and the Amal gamated Society of Carpenters' and Joiners and others (N.S.W.), for a variation of the aAvard, re ferred to the 44-hour Aveek claimed by the union. He ruled that the question would have to stand for the present. His Honor then dealt with the other mat ters mentioned in the claim. The appeal, so far as fares and travelling time Avcre concerned, AAras dismissed. The employers' appeal for a reduction of the allowance for the country from 2/- to 3/6 was allowed, no evidence having been given to show that the work away from home had become more arduous or costly since the last award. Regarding apprentices, he did not see how the increase of the rates of pay or the limitation of the proportion would tend to induce master builders to take ?apprentices,- and- the rates for apprentices would be as they were in the former award. -As to the employers' claim that the piece-work rat...
