POST OFFICE AT GEGEDZERICK. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 3 July 1869

POST OFFICE AT GrEGrEDZERICK. SINCE our last issue we have received from tbe Post Office authorities in Sydney the appended letter, and a person perusing it would naturally arrive at the conclusion that we had specially recommended the appointment of Postmaster should be conferred upon Mr. Thomas Lynch. We did not do so -, we certainly mentionedi his name in conjunction with that of Mr. William Oliver as gentlemen who would in all probability undertake the duties of the office. The Post Office authorities first nomi nated Mr, Thomas Lynch to tbe office, and now they cancel the appointment — but upon whet ground P because ' it appears lie does not reside there.' Where, then, joes he reside, if^not at Gegedzerink ? Is it because Mr. Lynoh's residence is called Claremont, and that it is about one and a half or even two miles off the Government or main road, that Mr. Lynch is not a resident of G-egedzerick? Or is it on account of somo fur ther, communication that the appointment has' be...

' He would give a verdict for plaintiff in £100, and expenses -to five witnesses,'' Suoh was the conclusion arrived at by bis . Honor Mr. District Court Judge MACFAin&jro in the case of Hassall v. Feilen, and such was tbe conclusion that the learned, bat admittedly in these cases inexperienced, Judge thoueht would give satisfaction to all, and meet the iustice of the case. Now, putting aside ' for the moment the fact that the case was one between the squatter and tbe free selector, and that the question at issue v/ae one of trespass, let us take the case on its merits, and after considering, the evidence, see if the ver diet given was a just one — whether the damages awarded were not in excesB, taking into consideration the period at which the trespass took place, of the actual injury sustained. . But before doinp there is a point on which a few remarks may be made. The defendant, Feii/en, applied for a postponement of the case, on the ground that he had been unable to procu...

DIPHTHERIA. [Newspaper Article] — The Manaro Mercury, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser — 3 July 1869

DIPHTHERIA. Db. Day, of Windsor, gives some instructions touching the treatment of diphtheria, which be very modestly says are not original, ^ but he has found thai by following them he has only lost three «asn out of one hundred and four or one hundred and fire. He prescribes for «hildron :— ' Take of dilu ted muriatic actd, two drachms ; half-a-pint of in fusion of gentian. Mix. Dose $ from one to three teaspoonfuls every four hours. Take of Beaufoy's solution of chloride of lime or soda, one ounce. The throat to be gently tonelied where the white spots appear every three hours.' He adds thefollovring mnta snout applying xne cniorine to tlie tnroat. The greatest care should be taken to procure the softest camel-hair pencil {of large size) in applying the chlorine to the throat, for fear of forcibly re moving the djpiitheritic deposits, by which means incalculable mischief may result, inasmuch '/as the abrased surface caused by the forcible removal by the deposit* would ponrontthep...

So far bb we can learn, these rains and storms have extended along the eastern coast, . at least suspend ing communication by sea, and we fear they have done muoh harm to shipping. Monday morning dawned with, a threatening aspect, and about mid day the rain began 'to fall generally, over, the dis trict. Towards evening tho rain was very heavy, accompanied occasionally by thunder and lightning/ and coming up from the coast inheavy black banks; AH Monday night tlw wind and rain were continu ous, but on Thursday forenoon the latter, swept up from .the east in occasional storms, and as the wind was inclined to be shifting many hoped that the. weather would' clear up.' PEDESTRIAIT MATCHj , HiGOmB T. Gvvtm8Qi&.-^A. foot race, which has for a considerable time aroused no little interest in sporting circles, was 'decided on the 12t.li June, on the old Red House Grounds at Northcote, 'Victoria. The match was the .result of a challenge 'sent by H. Cumraings, BOtne seven or eight weeks ago, to run Jf at. Higeine, another well-known runner, for 200 yards, for £200 a-side. The backers of the two men assembled in strong force. The betting was not brisk and the odds offered were very slight. Some time before the race 5 to 3 were:offered on Higgins, who appeared .to be rather the favourite ; but when the men appeared on the ground ana stripped, the betting declined to 5 to 4. Both runners seemed in capital 'form, and their appear ance evoked favourable comment. After some delay, which severely tested the patience pf the spectators, who were compelled to paddle about in the wet and mud, as there were no other 'sports going on, the men 'appeared at tie...
