Oakleigh Friendly Societies. U.A.O.D. CONCERT. There was a small but ap preciative audience at the Me chanics' Hall on Tuesday evening iast, the occasion being a per formance in aid of the unemployed members of lodges in the district, under the auspices of the above Lodge. It was disappointing to many present to see so few at such a rare musical treat-one could not say that the audience was repre sentative of the lodges in the dis trict and it is a great pity that the public missed the opportunity of supporting such a worthy cause. Ail apology was received from Bro McKay, stating he was de tained in the city, but in Miss Elsie Perry he sent along a worthy substitute, who ably accompanied the artists throughout. Those present were treated to a:1 excellent program as follows: Overture, Miss Elsie Perry ; P. Coleman, always a favorite with local audiences, confirmed in his rendering of Down in the Depths the favorable impression created at a recent entertainment and in re sponse to an ...

RIFLE CLUB WANTED. To Tian EDITOR. Sir-I feel with many others very great disappointment at the failure of Oakleigh residents to come forward and form a branch of the Citizens' Rifle Club in order to be a means of defence of our homes It is little encouragement to brave young fellows at the front, who are so gallantly sacrificing their lives for Australia, to find men a little alder too listless or careless to give a couple of evenings a week to drill and practice shooting in order, if the necessity arises, to defend all that Is dear to them. I trust Oak leigh will soon follow the good ex ample of other suburbs and form a good strong rifelclub.--Yours. etc. Taos. H. BROADWAY OVALS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 15 May 1915

BROADWAY OVALS. To THI EDITOR. Sir,-As this is the time of year to get trees lopped, I would sug gest that the ratepayers in Broad way should endeavor to rouse a little vigor in the councillors of the North Ward and get this done. If the gums were lopped aud bran ches trimmed the new growth later on would add to the beauty of the town. While it may be a useful plank to the platform of coming as pirants for municipal honors to have this neglect remedied, still the old reprasentatives may be ap proached with a view to this ob ject-Meanwhile I remain, yours, etc., RATEPAYER IN NORTH WARD.

Joyce (hon, secretary) said: At the previous council meeting I brought this matter up. Our object is twofold-(1) To ob tain your opinion re two sites, one in the Gardens and an alternative one in Broadway ; (2) Your atti tude towards the question of municipalisation. We have £220 in hand and estimate that the up keep ot the baths would not ex ceed £70 per year, as its care taking might be worked with that of curator of the park.
