The Pioneer. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1896. RENMABK GROWLERS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 30 October 1896

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 30. 1896. RENMABK GROWLERS. Growling is supposed co be a special attribute of the British nation. It has been said that an Englishman cannot exist without'hav ing something to growl a! out. It may be a national failing or idiosyn crasy. At any rate if we wish to vindicate cur vaunting in respect of our political institutions, we itiust after all acknowledge that we have less cause for grumbling than any other people. The Government of the State generally conies in for the largest share of general abuse, and after the category of its delinquincies has been thoroughly threshed out, the local authority, whatever it may be, gets a turn. The G.ity.Gprporation, the Municipal or District Council, whichever is paramount, are the butt of the hypercritical ' pul»lic." iien inark has not been an'-exception to the tb thte rule in tttis-''r&s{fcct'.°' Iud^e'd it may be said in this regard to furnish a rather more pronounced object lesson (to apply the word so often used a...

CANNING OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 30 October 1896

canning of fruits and vegetables! Mr. A. Molineux, F.L.S., General Secretary of the Central Agricultural Bureau, has sent us the report of the Eighth Annual Congress, and also a leaflet, compiled by himself, on the above subject. Copies may be ob tained from the Central Bureau by any settler for ward in ; 21. for stamp. The following-is the portion of his paper which we think may be useful to Reninark fruitgrowers. There is no sacret, and very little difficulties m preserving fruts and vegetables in a fresh condition ; but 'some kinds require longer treatment than others in order to destroy the germs of decay and fermentation. Fruit and vegetables ferment and decay in consequence of the action of certain germs upoa their juices. Those germs cannot exist; for many minutes, generally, when the tempera ture is above 169° F. Theroetically then, if we can subject our fruits and vegetables to a temperature of 212-' F., for a sufficient time all the g *nn.i of ferment and decay will be des...

A WILD DRIVE IN IRELAND. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 30 October 1896

A WILD DJlIVE IN 3EBLAND. [From Temple Bar.] Arrived at length, a length which seemed interminable, at W&terford, I thought it well to telegraph to my friend Ttreiice, lest in the excitement of the festivities of the season he might forget to send his 'bus to meet me at Ballylogue, the station at which you get out for the 'Cassel.' He prides himself on having an excellent memory, and the boast, 'I never re member to have ever forgotten any thing in all my life,' is as frequent on his !ips {is 'I'd have ye to know, sir, that I've forgotten a dashed sight more about it than ye cv:jr knew, sir.' Nevertheless I detmrd it prudent, if only by excess of precaution 10 wire— 'Arrive Ballylogue 410. Send 'bus, gray pair.' Jn pressing his invitation on me tie had promised among other inducements, that I should have his 'bus and pair of gwys to tool me over. 'Ye can come any time 3'e like,' he had said ; 'late or early, ye'li be equally welcome; an'1 whatever hour it may l>e of the d...

OUR TRIP TO THE WEST. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 6 November 1896

OUR TRIP TO THE WEST. [By Mk. B. Fuller, Je,] Leaving Renmark in April, we pro ceeded by the s. s. Lidedsdale to Gerald ton, the port of the Mnrcbison Goldfields, calling at Esperance Bay aud Freiuautle. Owing to the rush of shipping and goods we were detained a woek at the latter place. This gave as a clianoe of visiting Perth, where, as at Fivnmitle, we found everything on the " hum and go." Most attrac tive to one eyes were the signs of many Wfll known business houses, familiar in Adelaide and the Eastern Colonies. Beaching Geraldton on the Saturday, we left by train to Mullewa, trucking our two horses, spring dray and stores, thus saving us 70 miles of very heavy sandy road. Fixing things up we made a start for the. auriferous country, that of any importance being 80 miles from Mullewa. We did 20 a day on ac count of the water stages, which are that distance apart. On reaching Chain Pump we found good feed and water and so decided to put in a fort night here, there being n umero...
