DENMARK PUBLIG SGHOOL. [Newspaper Article] — Albany Advertiser — 17 June 1897

DENMARK PUBLIG SGHOOL. On Saturday, Hay 22, the first children's concert in connection with the above school, and in aid of the funds required to clear the grounds attached, which are required for drill and recreation purposes, was held in the. Denmark Alpha Hall, and proved a marked success, as, indeed, Mr. J. H. Otto, the head master, very well merited, he having spared neither time nor expense for the occasion. I The creditable' manner in which the various I items on the programme were gone through clearly shows that Mr. Otto is endowed with, that rare gift of being able to impart know ledge to the young. The hall and the stage were most tastefully decorated. A notable feature in the stage decorations was a shield bearing the inscription, " Prosperity to the Denmark 8chool." The proceedings opened with an overture, in which the most careful musical training of the string band was in evidence. The opening chorus, "We are the 8chool that's Gay and Happy," took the audience complete...

OUR OPEN COLUMN. THE HABBOR DEPARTMENT. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Albany Advertiser — 17 June 1897

OUR OPEN COLUMN. THE HARBOR DEPARTMENT. TO THE EDITOR. SIR,-Some few months ago Her Majesty's Government imported a steam launch for the use of the Harbor Department. I am sur- prised to notice by the Government Gazette of the 11th inst, that the tender of A. Arm- strong had been accepted for conveying rations, &c, to Breaksea Island for the year ending June 1898. Surely it is a waste of public money to engage outside help when the Department have the necessary appli- ances to do the work. It cannot be said that the pilot launch is otherwise engaged as, to my knowledge, she has been lying idle for the last seven days, and on an average is not engaged in pilot work more than three days a week. The Government are paying about £100 per annum for conveying rations to the Island, which should be done by the department launch. The Government also pay a considerable amount yearly for sending supplies to the Quarantine Station-this work might also be done by the pilot launch and the...
