Dreyfus' Letters to his Wife [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

Dreyfus' Letters to his Wife, From the Sieole, the following intensely interesting letters from Captain Emile Dreyfus to his wife Lucie, translated from the French for the Jewish Times and Observer. They will be read at this time with more than ordinary interest, breathing, as they do, the con tinued assertion for his innocence. The Sieele, as is well known, has commenced the publication of the letters that ex-Captain Dreyfus, has written to Mme. Dreyfus since his imprisonment, and in which he never ceases to protest his innocence. The following is the conclusion of a long .letter which he sent to his wife in September, 1896, in which he asks her to see the President of the Republic : — ' My dear Lucie, pay great attention to what I say, because I have suffered so much and have endured so many things, that life has become to me a matter of profound indifference, and I speak to you now as from the tomb, from the eternal silence that places one beyond all things. ... I speak to you as...

A Cherem Against "The Jewish World.' [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 April 1898

A Cherem Against ' The Jewish World.' We understand that application has been made to the Rabbis of Jerusalem to put ' The Jewish World ' in Cherem. This proposed ban is the result of recent observations in this journal on the administration of the Chaluka, and the applicant himself, is, we learn, one of the individuals who, whilst resident in Jerusalem protested most loudly against the whole Chaluka sys tem. The observations were such as they have no We have no wish, under the present economic condi tions of Jerusalem, to see the' Chaluka abolished, but we do desire to see this charity, on which thousands of poor people depend for the most elementary necsssities Of existence, properly administered. As for the individual collectors, we might be sorry for their loss of a livelihood, but we cannot agree to the waste of 40 per cent, of the total income by a method of collection which is the most expensive that could be deviseu, and by no means the most effective. Our observations have,...

ENGLAND. MR. W. ASHE PAYNE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

ENGLAND. MR. W.ASHE PAYNE. We ('Jewish World ' of March 25th) record with great regret the death of Mr. William A she Payne, Headmaster of the Stepney Jewish Schools, who died at his residence at Enfield on Saturday evening last. Deceased had been ailing fcr the last few years, but his illness only took a serious turn a few weeks ago when a premature announcement of his decease created much consternation in the East End where he was a well -knpwn and deservedly popular figure. Mr. Payne, before his appointment to the Headmastership of the Stepney Jewish Schools, kept a private school in Islington, at which, curiously enough were educated several co-religionists now well-known men in public affairs. Primarily through the influence of the late Michael Henry, whose family have never ceased to take an interest in the school. Mr. Payne, was, some twenty-five years, appointed Headmaster of the Stepney Jewish Schools, then accommodating some 100 lads, in in succession to Mr. (now Rev.) M. ...

SOUTH AFRICA. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

SOUTH AFRICA. : Mr, Ellie Marx, the gifted violinst, recently made his debut before a large and critical audience, at Johannes burg. The young musician's appearance had been looked forward to with more than ordinary interest, partly from the fact that he was reported to be a violinist of exceptional merit, and partly because. although a native of England, he spent the greater part of his childhood in Cape Colony, and can, there fore, be regarded as a South African. His performance was a great success. He was much helped by his sister's (Miss Gertrude Marx) skilful accompani ment. Dr. Rutherford Harris has contributed the sum of 25 guineas to the fur.ds of the Helping Hand Jewish Philanthropic Society. At a recent concert given here among the Jewish community, a number of songs and recitations were rendered in Yiddish, to the great enjoyment of the large audience.

'ALL IS VANITY' saith the Preacher, And the preacher is right, althongh he did'nt refer to Bicycles. There is, however, a vanity which everyone has in life — a proper desire to cut ? shine his fellows— to have the BEST TO BE GOT. In bicycles this is just as easy as possible. Few will dispute the fact that to-day, as in years past, it keeps up the enviable reputation of being the Best Bicycle in the World. BENIETT AMD WOOD, Ltd., 39? George-street, Sole Agents.

MASONIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

MASONIC. o Keasons why Jews should be enthusiastic ; Masons are obvious to every member of the Fraternity, for upon the traditions, history and religion of their race the Order is founded. To them we are indebted for our idea of one Supreme Being of contradistinguished from the many gods of heathen worship. The Old TAflta.mp.nf, in all it,a STandeur and sublimitv. is their conception. Its teachings relative both to our temporal and eternal destinies are the foundation of our religion, as well as of the mysteries of our Craft. The sacred volume, never closed in open Lodge, with all its light and wisdom, the first object the eyes of the Entered Apprentice behold, the rule and guide to our faith through every grade of life, they gave us. To their wise king Solomon, the first Grand Master of the Order, Lodges were originally dedicated, and to his genius is ascribed much of the moral work of Speculative Masonry. With the erection and adoration of his splendid Temple is associated every r...

Ancient and Modern Anti-Semitism. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 29 April 1898

Ancient and Modern Anti-Semitism. Rabbi R. Lasker preached a very able sermon at the Saturday morning service at Temple Ohabei Shalom Boston, on April 29th, his subject being ' Ancient and Modern Anti-Semitism/' His remarks were in part as follows ' The Sabbath before Purim is designated in the Jewish calender as the Sabbath of rememberance. it brings to our mind one of the most cruel and treacherous enemies Israel ever had, the Amalekites. Amalek was the first anti-Semite on record, the first to sircvv Hie sccus UJ. gruuuuiesa auuuu&ii^ agcunsi. laiaci in the hearts of all of his posterity. Haman was a descendant of Amalek. I venture the assertion that if it was possible to search into the pedigree of the Jew-baiters, Stoecker and Ahlwart, Dr. Lueger, Drumont and Esterhazey, it would be found that Amale kitish blood is running in their veins. It is remark able that these anti-Semitic agitators are using to-day the same charge which Haman more than twenty-three hundred years...
