, oyiVlkbUblri Jr^A 1 [ Market Report and : Record Saleso ] . MONDAY SHEEP. - About 17,500 forward. Quality good. Market again dearer. There were 19,214 sheep listed for sale from 118 owners and about 17,500 were forward. These included all de scriptions _ of merinos and crossbreds, also occasional lines of comebacks. The general quality was .again good. Prime sheep were well in evidence and in cluded various pens of extra prime tops, the best noted on 'the day being a line of 300 odd merino wothers from E. Jones, Gular, which made to 60/3 and averaged 53/3. Fair to good trade mutton made up the major por tion of the supply. Good to prime lambs, however, were very scarce. Me dium quality sheep were well in evi dence, but the proportion of poor sheep was small. Altogether the general quality was satisfactory for trade purposes. There was a good attendance of buy ers. CATTLE. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

?CATTLE. About 4,000 yarded. Quality plain. Market very irregular, but generally in seller's favor. About 4,000 cattle, including 450 from Queensland, were yarded. These included' all descriptions of veal and beef, from calves at 18/-, old derelict cows at 20/-, to prime bullocks at £17 odd and prime cows to nearly £11. The general quality was again on the plain side, although bettor than Thursday's offering. There was_ a larger proportion of good medium weight beef, and a better showing of good to prime bullocks on the heavy side. Lnfortunately for the trade, however, the major portion of the supply again consisted of medium to plain bullocks, steers, cows and heif ers. There was also a fairly heavy sprinkling of rough to poor cattle, and, strange ,to say, some of the latter at times during tho afternoon met with a much better sale than on Thursday. Al together the general quality of the yarding was not satisfactory for trade purposes. The usual buyers were in attendance. The marke...

FINGERPRINTS. TO IDENTIFY MASTERPIECES. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

FIN.GERPRINT8. TO IDENTIFY MASTERPIECES. Like the climax of a fantastic de tective story is the latest achievement of science in comparing fingerprints to identity as a genuine Da Vinci masterpiece, an age-worn canvas refcently bought by a New York collector of . art. The question of whether a certain painting is the original work of a gre&t master can now be determined absolutely says 'Popular Science Monthly/' simply by examining the painting for fingerprints left on the canvas by the artist and comparing these with finger prints foiind on paintings known to be originals. ' Signatures can and have been fradulently duplicated. Fing erprints cannot be forged. When George T. Pearsons of New York last year acquired of one of ^paintings, the restoration of one of them, belieVed to be of comparatively little worth, revealed qualities that at once identified it as the work of a master. PROOF. 'From what I could judge,' he says, in the 'Scientific Journal,' 'the pain1- ing was a G...

(By "Gossip.") [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

(By 'Gossip.') A.R.L. — I have kept your letter quite a long time in hopes of coming across 'Science Gossip.' It has been out of print a long time, but occasion ally a second-hand copy comes into the market. But I have not been able to get a copy. I think it would be bene ficial to reprint some ox my old 'Gos- sips,' E.L.H. — Thank you very much for sending me that booklet, 'Overseas.' Strangely enough, although I had met Mr. Wrench and his sister, when they were out here ; they never sent me a copy of their paper, that I know of. It is a most extraordinary production with a great lot of advertisements in it. But there is a lot of good reading matter in it, which will appeal to the far flung islanders who compose the British Empire. Somehow it appeals to me, and I give it a glad welcome, and I think your little girl is very fortunate in having such a magazine to read. I hope you- are doing well, and 'I am glad to have heard from you, C.F.F.p — Dear Sir and Brother, — I have carried ...

THE EPITAPH. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

THE EPITAPH. Here rests his head upon the lap of Earth A Youth, to Fortune and to Fame unknown; Fair Science frown'd not on his humble birth, And Melancholy marh'd him for her own. Large was his bounty , and his soul sincere; Heaven did a recompense as largely send:. He gave to Misery all he had, a tear; He gain'd from Heaven, 'twas all he wish'd, a friend. Prohibition AS SEEN BY AN AUSTRALIAN. PART II. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

Prohibition AS SEEN BY AN AUSTRALIAN. PART II. A Country Woman writes:-^' As you will seo by the address, I have arrived at the political capital of the U.S., and am charmed with it, in its win^ ter dress it is beautiful and must be exquisite in spring, with the trees in leaf and the flowers blooming. Yes terday « fall of snow made if look like an old-fashioned Xmas card, and just as I like the country so do I like the people, who have all been very kind to me. I can only deplore the fact that prohibition is such an evil here. 'As you know, I had made up my mind to study prohibition here Impar tially, to try and judge if it really was the solution of the alcoholic prob lem. I am returning to Australia a rabid anti-prghibitionist, and pray most earnestly now that I may do some thing worth while to save my country from such a cyrge, EASY TO OBTAIN LIQUOR. 'I have seen just as many drunken men, and without specially looking for them. Vile drink can be obtained easily — violent crimes a...

BE GOOD HUMOURED. [Newspaper Article] — Country Life Stock and Station Journal — 15 April 1924

SJE GOOD HUMOURED. Above all things and at all times practice yourself in good humour; that is, of all human qualities, the most amiable and endearing. Whenever you feel a warmth of tem per arising, check it at once and sup press it, recollecting- that it would make you unhappy within yourself and dis liked by others. Nothing gives one person so great an advantage over another in all oircum stanoes. In little disputes with your com panions, give way rather than insist on triflles, for their love, and the appro bation oif others will be worth more to you than the trifle in dispute. ?—Thomas Jefferson.
