To the Editor of the ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — The South Australian Advertiser — 26 August 1858

To the Editor of the ADVERTISER. feir- Having been requested by many of my friends to lay the whole of the matter relative to the defective coa struction of the Adelaide City ATat-rworks, so faras relates to the River Weir, before the public, I shall feel extremely obliged by your giving publicity to the follow- ing statement of facts : I may premise by saying that I took charge of the works at tho AVeir, as Clerk of the Works, on the 24th December list, at which time the concrete foundations avere nearly complete. As Clerk of tho Works I avas, of course, under the direct superintendence of the Engineer. On my ar.-'val I may observe that I saw 20 barrels of bad cement o...

TUE AGKICCLTÜBAL SHOAV. - The Plough- ing Match and Implement Show of AVed nesday were well followed up by the exhi- bition of implements on Thursday.* A dinner, served most admirably by Aldridge & Byston, on the evening of the second day, brought the whole to a fitting conclusion. For details of the affair we must refer to our reports ; but a word or two here may not be out of place. A large exhibitor Avriteá, requesting us to inform the Committee that better method is necessary in allotting to the respective exhibitors the pens, or places in which they are to put their stock, and that this should be done the day before, instead of leaving everything until the last moment. The same gentleman also complains of the want of explicitness in the offer ot prizes. For in- stance, a prize is offered for the six best ewes : is it meant for the six ewes fittest for making mutton or for growing wool P It is alleged that, on account of the deficiency of description, exhi- bitors do not...

AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY. To the Editor of the ADVERTISER. [Newspaper Article] — The South Australian Advertiser — 27 August 1858

AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY. To the Editor of the ADA'ERTISER. Sir-On looking over the Register this morning, I was surprised it should state that Mr. Craig's machine was worked with one horse, as there were two horses. Again, that Taylor's was on the same principle a ! the one Mr. Craig introduced ; for Mr. Craig's is a blower, Mr. Tay- lor's is a common winnowing-machine, as different with regard to principle as north is to south. Mr. Taylor says he is the inventor of both ; it is no in- vention of Mr. Craig's. Mr. Craig is made to say in the Observer, at the Morphett Vale ploughing Match, th it he hxs been endeavouring io dress the corn in tin fieM »eady for market, for the last 30 years. Now, Mr. Editor, that is about nine years before the colony was christened, and 10 years before the reaper was invented. There was a patent taken out in Melbourne, on Mr. Craig's plan, bv an Adelaide gentle an, long before Mr. Craig applied for one. I should feel obliged by the insertion of this. I a...
