DISTRICT NEWS. (From Our OorrwpondnU.) Smaaton. EMPIRE DAY, Sraeaton will be en fete on Saturday. A monster procession, in connection with Empire Day celebrations, will leave the bank corner at i o'clock and proceed to the show grounds, where a programme of interesting events will be carried out. Considerable interest and enthusiasm is being displayed. Quite a number of groups and indi vidual characters are in coursc of pre paration for the procession, the characters ranging from an up-to-date wedding group to the primitive Kaffir postman from South Africa. At 3 15 a premiership football match will be played between the local team and Creswick boys. A fitting conclusion to these events will be a grand conccrt the Mechanics' hall, commencing at 8 o'clock.

Kingston. FIRE BRIGADE. The monthly meeting of the local brigade was held on Tuesday evening, the captain (C. H. Barker) in the chair. A letter was received from the Board as to the Deputy Chief's inspection, which was most satisfactory. A letter of thanks, and also a cheque for £1/2!, Was received from Mr A T. Leishman. in acknowledgment of the good work done by the brigade at his recent fire. The resignation of Fireman Corbett was received with regret, he having left the district for fllooroopna. Two nominations were received for the position. It was dccided to attend the Empire service on Sunday next, and also to compete for Mr G. J. Briosdeo's trophy on Friday.
