NOTES ON TASMANIA. No III. PARDOE CHEESE FACTORY. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 14 December 1886

VOTES ? TASiTfAnIA. t By A VIcroiuw. No III. P 0RDOE CHEESE FACTORY. It was with feelings of pleasure that I accepted the kind invitation of R. D. Stewart, Esq., the proprietor, to pay a visit to the above faetory. I may here say that Mr. Stewart, who is a native of Tdasmania, is a gentlemanwhohasobtained a very wide reputation for his many good qualities. Foremost among these is his munificent liberality in the support of public institutions and churches, to the v latter, of which he contributes alargepro.r portion of his annual income; in fact, he is one of those men (unfortunately rather s few in number) who "do good by stealth, 8 and blush to find it tune." I Accordingly at 5 o'clock in the morning my kind friend and ent rtainer, theRev. J. A. Osborne, and I mounted our steedsand started for Pardoe, which is distant some 10 miles from Latrobe. A brisk ride of some 7 miles through the fresh anid brae. ing morning air brought us to "Ranock," where Mr. R. D. Stewart usually resides...

The Traralgon Record. "MODERATE, BUT PROGRESSIVE." (Published every Tuesday & Friday Morning.) TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1886. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 14 December 1886

".lIOIlF.tI.re, l:Ut PROGRtsslvE.. (Publlith, d rvea, Tueslay & Friday morning.) TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 188G. TII controversy in connection with the sale of the Mechanics' site was: a keen one while it lasted, and a con sideranleamount of warmnth was visible in the way in which each side urged its point. Doubtless the utmost sil cerity of intention was felt by each, and the publlic good theisole end aimed at I y either party. The question, as our reilers are aware, was brought ullder the attention of the Minister of Lands, and an inquiry was held' when the whole circumstances were under review, and the .M\inister has decided that the sale shall not lie revoked, but is to hold good. This point !having been delinitely settled it seems to .us that any further debate would be futile, aud. the best thing for all parties to do now is to lay aside any trifling feelings engendered during the dis cussion if this vexed question, and lay flheir heads together to select the bmost cligibl...

NOTES BY A NOMAD. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 14 December 1886

NOTES BY A NOMAD. The Victorian Assembly, judging from the disorderly debate which took place on the Irrigation Bill on Friday night, is fast degenerating into the evil condition which the New South Wales Parliament has fallen. It is true that a free tight like that which took place in the Sydney Legislatvie Hall did not eventuate, but theaspect. of affairs was perilously likd it at one stage of the debate. The acrimony and personal offensiveness imported into the discussion were disgraceful, and such scenes serve to point the weapons which the enemies of demo cracy are continually levelling against representative government. Each side of the House appears to have furnished its due quota of disorderly members, and the only .edeeming features were at the close, when the Premier and leader of the Opposition expressed their regrets at their hasty choler. But it would have been far better had no such exhibition ever been made. A demand for a daily Hansard is now all the rage among certa...

MULTUM IN NUCE. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 14 December 1886

[MULTUJI IA' ? ICE. Lively scenes at the Traralgon Shire Council' meetings have become the order of the day. A strong agitation has arisen in Queens land against the importation of American and New Zealand pine. Owing to the difficulties in the way of timber getters they complain that they cannot compete with the imported wood without a duty. The timber merchants of Melbourne rave protested against any increase in the t.uty.npon.imnported timber. They con tend that the great increase in building in r ictoria, has been greatly stimulated by the free importation of cheap material, and is that the'consumption of the colo nial timber has increased along with that of the iniioited. Adelaide advices state that two Vic torian diggers, who arrived a week ago, and represent capitalists in that colony, intend to take 40 experienced diggers to scour the Willunga district, which they "coil.ider is a gold-bearing country. A curihes marriago ceremon y . took place recently at Nurenhcrg, Germany, ...

CORRESPONDENCE. SCAMP. To the Editor of the Traraleon Record. [Newspaper Article] — Traralgon Record — 14 December 1886

CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the Traralgon Record. Being a perapatetic individual, I scam- pered into the police court the other day to try and find some amusement, and I certainly admit that I passed a few hours of monotony away listening to the careful decision of the presiding J.P., the cross- fire of the legal profession, and the perjury of some of the witnesses. That a tall amount of swearing was done, no one pre sent could consciencionsly doubt, it called forth a very just remark from the bench that the evidence of some of the witnesses was very contradictory; well, not to put   too fine a point on it I should say they swore deliberate and wilful lies, and the worthy J.P. must have been sorely tried to arrive at a just decision, but in looking round for a beer the general opinions I heard expressed were that the decisions gave general satisfaction. The acoustic   properties of the building prevented me from hearing a lot, but what I did hear teach...
