THE CHARGE AGAINST MR. J. G. BEANEY. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 July 1866

1 THE CHARGE AGAINST Ml1. J. G. BEANEY. (From the "'Age.") r t The second trial of Dr. Beaney for the r murder of Mary Lewis was brought to a C conclusion on Wednesday last, after having occupied the Court over a week. Mr. As pinall, who conducted the defence, did not call any witnesses, but merely addressed the e jury in a very able speech. The following is t His Honor's summing up : Iis Honor ,said the prisoner, James George Beaney, stood charged with endea vouring to procure abortion, and, by that -means, of having caused the death of Mary Lewis. That in the eye of the law was mur der. If, in the perpetration of an unlawful act, death ensued, the crime was murder and no other. The whole case for the Crown was that the prisoner was a skilful, expert and clever doctor, and therefore the death of the deceased could not have been caused by any unskilfulness on his part. No doubt, if the deceased had been pregnant, and the pri soner had treated her as not pregnant, and so caused her d...

P?ELuI rD TrIesI&Dy oErtIcs. i'HURSDAY, JULY 5, 1866. Tur Board appointed some time ago to con sider the claims for rewards out of the £5,000 voted by the Legislature for new manufac tures and industries have prepared their re port, from which we learn that sixtv-seveh applications were'received prior to the first day of December, 18(5, and nine after that date; which were too late and 1hieh were not considered or attended to. The report states that under the rcgulations the Board tl are precluded from giving premiums or re. G commending such for any manafsctures or u industries established previous to the fi?t T day of January, IS14, as in their opinion it si would be a very diff:cult task, more especially n in the state this colony is in, to be retro- c spective and it was thought more prudent d to fix and determineupon a recent date. SEYMOUR AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY'S PLOUGHING MATCH. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 July 1866

I SEYMOUR AGRICULTURAL SO CIETY'S PjOUGIIIING MATCH. The annual ploughing match, of the Sey mour. Agricultural- Society took place on n Thursday last, in the paddock of Mr John t: Guild, Seymour. The weather was most a unfavourable, it being drizzling rain. all day, t but the' ground was very stilf, notwithstan i ding that it ought to be well-saturated from 1 the wet weather -previously. Owing to a number of holes in the ground, caused by th t trees-being grubbed and loose earth thrown 1 in, the work of the respective competitors ( was a very difficult one, and at such spots it 1 was impossible for the ploughmen to display I their skill and ability. The ploughing, how ever, was very credita~le, some of it being remarkably good. The- number of ploughs i that-started was eight-there would have been many more had the weather and the ground been more favorable. The judges on I the occasion were Messrs D. Spence and Robert Flood, who were appointed in the absence of two judges who were e...

DREADFUL MINING ACCIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 5 July 1866

DREADFUL MINING ACCIDENT. (FROM THE SPECIAL REPORTER OF THE IN GLEWOOD ADVERTISER.) On Wednesday morning the inhabitants of Inglewood were alarmed by the intelli- gence brought by a horseman from Jericho, that the claim belonging to the Prince of Wales Company had fallen in, and that the whole of the men at work were buried below the fallen masses. It was stated that about eight o'clock a man came up the shaft pale and agitated, said that the whole _ ground was caved in, that he was the only one who had escaped, and that the shrieks of those who were being struck down and burried up in the mullock were heart- rending. Dr. Radcliffe, being fortunately at home, at once started for the scene of acci- dent, Mr. Donevan having kindly volun-   teered to drive him over, while some of the   hospital committee proceeded to get every-   thing in readiness to receive those of the   sufferers who might require its assist-   ance. ...

GIPPSLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 12 July 1866

G IPPSLAND. Regarding selections under the 42nd clause of the Land Act, the Bhirnsdale cor respondent of the Gippsland 1 imes writes: " Marking out twenty-acre blocks is quite the order of the day" here, and.the conWe quence is,.the surveyor is in great demand. Widows young and old, gushing innocence in crinoline "on this occasion only," boldly writing itself of the full age of 21: years, young bachelors, and old sinners, are all ap plicants for vhit nothing but the clause re ferred to could hlve given them, i.e.,, a p:cee of good land, and at a fair rent; To have obtained any of these lauds at auctiun, would have required a very, long purse, in fact but?ery fel of these for whose special benefit the clause was framed would have had the slightest-clhance. There are other advsntages, too. OrrTP,?Ra SPiIrons GoLD FOR S.LF- "This well-used trick of the Chinese," sayi the M'Ivor Times, " appears- to be too at tra:tiveto be given up in a hurry; that it'is successful in some cases -there can be no doubt. It was not so, however, in a case that happened on Friday last. On that day a Chinaman presented a parcel. of spurious metal for sale at1Ir. Ilodgson's store, and the imitation of the genuine article was so close, that Mr. HIodgson would have pur chafed it had he not been warned Biefore hand of the nature of the material which the particular Chinaman was trying to sell as gold. As soon ;s John offered the spurious metal Mr ITodgson sent for a policeman. lie gave the Chinaman .ome money for the article, and, just at the time, Mr Hall en tered the store. Mr. Iiodgson asked him what he thought of the gold ? Mr. Hall\vas about to examine it, and had just said; 'It looks like a nice sample,' when the China men struck the blowing-dish and sent the contents flying in all directi...
